๐ Exploring Japanese Cultural Celebrations in July! ๐
Konnichiwa, everyone! July has brought forth some vibrant cultural celebrations in Japan. ๐ฏ๐ต Let's take a moment to explore these joyous festivities!
Tanabata (Star Festival) ๐: On July 7th, Japanese skies light up with the Tanabata celebration. According to ancient folklore, two star-crossed lovers are reunited across the Milky Way on this day. People write their wishes on colorful strips of paper (tanzaku) and hang them on bamboo trees, adding to the enchanting atmosphere of the event.
Ocean Day (Marine Day) ๐: On the third Monday of July, Japan celebrates "Umi no Hi" or Ocean Day, a national holiday dedicated to appreciating the beauty and bounty of the sea. With its long coastline and maritime history, this day holds immense significance. Many people head to the beaches and engage in various ocean-related activities, such as beach clean-ups, marine conservation events, and water sports, while also reflecting on the importance of sustainability and ecological balance.
Gion Matsuri ๐ฎ: Throughout July, Kyoto becomes the centre of attention as it hosts the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's most famous festivals. This month-long celebration includes lively parades featuring stunning floats, traditional performances, and a captivating display of lanterns that illuminate the streets at night.
Sumida River Fireworks Festival ๐: Nothing says summer in Japan like a dazzling fireworks display! The Sumida River Fireworks Festival, held in Tokyo, is a breathtaking spectacle of colors and shapes that paint the night sky. Locals and visitors alike gather along the riverbanks to enjoy this fantastic show.
These are just a few highlights of the marvelous cultural celebrations happening in Japan this month. Embracing these traditions allows us to connect with the country's rich heritage and vibrant spirit. ๐ Let's cherish and learn from these beautiful customs that bring our communities together.

Valentine's Day in Japan is a unique celebration of love and affection. Unlike in Western countries, where the holiday is primarily celebrated by couples, in Japan it is a day for women to express their love to the special people in their lives. On February 14th, women give gifts, often chocolate, to their loved ones, including partners, family members, and close friends. Some women also opt to give "giri-choco" to colleagues or acquaintances as a symbol of obligation. On White Day, one month later, the favour is returned by men, who give gifts to the women who have given them gifts. This playful holiday is a staple of Japanese culture and a testament to the country's enduring appreciation for all forms of love and affection.
