What does your child do when something doesn't seem fair?
This may be one of the harder parts of resilience.
A referee makes a call they disagree with.
Someone else gets selected.
A teacher makes a decision they don't understand.
They don't grade when a friend does.
The feelings are real:
😡anger
🥺embarrassment
😒disappointment or frustration.
Rather than telling children simply “Don't be upset,” we can teach them to recognise what's happening:
Feel it → Name it → Choose your response.
We can't promise children that everything in life will always be fair.
We can help them develop the skills to handle themselves when it isn't.
That's a very different kind of strength. 👊

Focus on the process, not just the result.
We often mention to the kids that they need to get things wrong many times before it is perfect. So let’s get started with the process rather than the end result.
A kick, throw, kata, maths problem or football skill might take dozens…….perhaps hundreds of attempts before it starts to click.
We sometimes become so focused on children succeeding that we forget how important struggling with something can be.
This week we're talking about grit: being willing to stay with something worthwhile when it isn't easy.
Children need opportunities to discover:
“I couldn't do it... then I practised... and eventually I could.”
Things worth having are often hard to get. Getting it wrong is part of getting better.
Trust the process.

What happens when we don’t get the result we wanted?
We chat on the mat this month with the kids about Resilience.
The image below that we have generated is not the sight that we like to see too often watching kids sport.
They miss a grading. They don't make the team. They lose a game. Or perhaps they simply can't perform a new skill yet.
These moments can be disappointing…………. but they're also opportunities to build resilience.
Our goal isn't to remove every disappointment from a child's path. It's to help them learn that one result doesn't define them.
A setback gives us a choice: “I'm no good at this” or “What do I need to do next?”
This week in our Chat on the Mat we're talking about getting back up, learning from the experience and having another go.
You only really lose when you stop trying. 🥋

What do you do when nobody is watching?

The strongest leaders aren't always the loudest.

They're the people others can trust.

They tell the truth.
They admit mistakes.
They take responsibility for their actions.

Leadership and integrity go hand in hand.

Because people will follow someone who is honest, reliable, and willing to do the right thing..............even when it's difficult.

This week we're teaching our students that one of the greatest leadership skills is simply taking ownership and learning from mistakes. 👊

What happens when things don't go to plan?

A partner doesn't show up.

The game changes.

You have to work with someone different.

Things aren't always exactly how we want them.

Good leaders don't complain about the situation.

-----They adapt.-----

They stay calm.
They look for solutions.
They help others stay positive.

This month we're teaching students that adaptability is one of the most important leadership skills they can develop.

Because the people around us often take their cues from how we respond when things become difficult. 👊

Lots of fun last Friday at our little competition.
For a lot of our kids, this is an opportunity to explore how stress of an audience and winning and loosing can affect our nervous system and performance.
Thank you everyone for coming along.

Who helped you become better at something?

Most of us can think of a teacher, coach, parent, or friend who helped us learn and grow. And we take a piece of each of them forward, even when they are not around.

Great leaders do the same for others.

In martial arts, leadership isn't about being better than someone else.

It's about helping the people around you become better too.

Encouraging a teammate.
Helping someone who is struggling.
Being patient when someone is learning.

When we help others improve, everybody wins.

That's leadership. 👊

What does a leader look like?

Many people think leaders are the loudest person in the room or the person in charge.

But leadership often starts with the small things.

✅Helping pack away equipment.
✅Listening when others are speaking.
✅Working hard when nobody is watching.

Children don't need a title or a belt like in the picture to be leaders.
Every day they influence their friends, teammates, brothers, sisters, and classmates through their actions.

This week we're teaching our students that leadership begins with setting a good example.

Because people may not always listen to what we say, but they are always watching what we do. 👊

Sempai Aaron has been training with us since he was 5 years old.
It is great to see him following his passion in the stunt world.
Also funny to see him breaking all of the great habits that we instilled including dropping his guard 😂😂
Great entertainment value for the kids as they ask him for some domos in classes.
