We’re rethinking our cosy reading space—and we’d love your family to help design it!

Our learning environments influence how children feel, explore, connect and learn. That’s why we’ve been looking at this space through the children’s eyes and listening to what makes them feel comfortable, curious and welcome.

Now it’s your turn! Take a look at designs 1–4 and tell us:

💚 Which space gets your vote?
💭 What do you like about it?

Please share this post with another family. We’d love to gather as many little voices and big ideas as possible.

National Pyjama DayToday we enjoyed a cosy and fun-filled National Pyjama Day, with our children and educators coming dressed in their favourite PJs! We shared lots of laughter, special activities, and warmed up with delicious hot chocolates. While today was a fun and exciting day, it also provided an opportunity to talk about the importance of kindness, community, and helping others. National Pyjama Day raises awareness and support for children living in foster care, helping to provide resources and opportunities that can make a positive difference in their lives. It reminds us that every child deserves to feel safe, supported, valued, and loved. We are proud to be part of a community that embraces compassion and understands the importance of helping children thrive. Thank you to our families and educators for joining us in celebrating this meaningful day. Together, we can make a difference—one pair of pyjamas at a time.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.

Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.

Reading is simple, joyful, and sets children up for success in school and life.

Our Centre Leadership team had a wonderful time attending and supporting Step to Prep at Helensvale State School. We loved setting up a natural weaving activity that both the children and adults could enjoy together—such a fun and creative way to connect with the community! It was so special to see everyone stop, get involved and exploring together. It was also fantastic to catch some familiar faces and watch our future prep students begin their journey, learning about their new school in such a positive and welcoming environment. We’re already looking forward to the next visit!

A big thank you to Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) today, for coming to visit us at Goodstart Helensvale.

The children were excited to meet the paramedics and learn about the important role they play in helping people within our community. During the visit, the children were invited to explore the inside of the ambulance and learn about some of the equipment carried on board. They had the opportunity to sit on the patient stretcher and see how patients are safely transported when they need medical assistance. The paramedics also spoke to the children about when to call an ambulance, how they help people in emergencies, and ways we can stay safe and healthy. One of the highlights of the visit was seeing a heart rate machine and learning how it helps paramedics provide life-saving care.

It was a bittersweet day today as we said goodbye to one of our longest standing families as they begin an exciting new chapter in Melbourne. Our little friend has brought so much joy to our centre especially with her love of wearing tutus to kindy! So, of course, the team couldn’t let her go without celebrating in true style. Today we all donned our own tutus and had a special dance party just for her.

Moments like these remind us how special our community is and how much fun we have together every day. While we will miss her dearly, we feel so grateful to have been part of her and her older sister's journeys. Wishing your family all the very best for this next adventure !
