💙 Last Tuesday, we came together for an important conversation about men’s mental health and su***de prevention 🫂

With men accounting for around 75% of su***des in Australia, knowing how to recognise when someone might be struggling and feeling confident enough to start the conversation is a skill every future doctor needs 🩺

We were so lucky to hear from three incredible speakers:

🌹 Bronwen Edwards from Roses in the Ocean, who shared her powerful lived experience and insights into how lived experience can shape the way we approach su***de prevention.

🩺 Dr Nadja, a GP Registrar with a background in Emergency Medicine, who shared practical advice on recognising risk, starting conversations and providing inclusive, patient-centred care.

🧠 Dr James O’Brien, a Psychiatric Registrar, who shared his clinical perspective and experience on supporting patients with mental health difficulties and su***de risk.

From lived experience to the clinic, we explored how we can start the conversation, recognise the signs and use the skills that can save lives.

On Wednesday 29 July, GEM hosted Research 102: Intro to Statistics, and we had an amazing evening enjoying bagels while brushing up on the stats every medical student should know! 📚✨

A huge thank you to our fantastic presenter, Liv Van Halen, for sharing your expertise and helping us build confidence in the statistical concepts that will come in handy for both research and clinical placements. 💙

Bronwen lost her brother Mark to su***de in 2008 after supporting him for a number of years.
In 2011, Bronwen Edwards founded ‘Roses in the Ocean’, a lead organisation for lived experience, which exists to save lives and reduce emotional pain by informing, influencing and enhancing su***de prevention through lived experience, and supporting organisations to effectively and meaningfully engage lived experience expertise.
It is a driving force behind several ground-breaking initiatives influencing su***de prevention policy and strategies, health system reform, integration of su***de prevention into workplaces and designing non-clinical alternatives of care.

Introduction to Gender Affirming Care with Captain Nia Franks, a trans woman, MProfPsych graduate, passionate researcher and advocate for accessible gender affirming healthcare.
Clinical Applications: Scenario-Based Teaching with Dr. Stuart Aitken: specialist sexual health physician with a focus on endocrine treatments for trans and non-binary patients.
Round table discussions and dedicated Q&A time.
