So you've written your first Why X School essay. Yup, nailed it - you think.

Now, read it again. If you can change the name of the school and still submit it, you've got it all wrong.

The Why X School essay can't be a generic template. While you can and should work efficiently by developing a structure you can use across your applications, you need to understand exactly what is being asked of you in the essay prompt, and demonstrate your fit with relevant specifics.

This essay is a critical element of your application package - don't underestimate the amount of time they take to research and develop effectively.

Do not let this be your admissions reader. One of the most important rules of essay writing: ENGAGE THE READER.

Your opening sentence is key to making your audience want to read on or nod off, and there are some great techniques you can use - a short punchy sentence, one word, start in the middle or at the end of a story, among others.

Make the tired, overworked adcom reader SIT UP, TAKE NOTE, want to read on... unlike the reader depicted here. 😅
