A driver leaves Port Hedland at 8am happy. By 6pm he's furious.
Nobody did anything to him.
He couldn't get his partner on the phone. That was it. Ten hours in the truck with that.
There were twenty reasons her phone could've been off. Dropped it in the toilet. Flat battery. Left it at a friend's place. He picked the one that hurt the most, she doesn't want to talk to him, and fed it all day.
I ask my guys one question when this comes up. Are you surprised?
Because if you're not surprised, you've got no business being angry. Anger comes from an expectation that didn't get met. If you knew the phone thing was a possibility, you weren't ambushed. You mixed up your hope with your expectation.
Hope is what you want to happen. An expectation is something you've decided you're owed. Get those two confused and you'll end up furious at someone over a promise they never made.
The other thing. You can't think your way out of a spiral. At the next break, get out and stretch your legs. 25 minutes if you've got it, 10 if you don't. Moving the body changes your state faster than anything I know.
His day shouldn't go good or bad based on what someone on the other side of the country didn't do.
That's going wherever the wind blows. No way to live.
