I love looking closely at her drawings and noticing all the little things she’s working on.

Because when the paper is just there, there’s no pressure to actually “do a drawing.”

She can pick up a pencil, add a little something, wander off, come back to it later and keep going.

And if you watch closely, you can see the little micro-skills she’s focusing on in this video.

The tiny details.

The repetition.

The same shapes and movements being practised over and over.

Things you might not even notice if you were just looking at the finished picture.

I think that’s one of the best things about having a big piece of paper taped down and available for days at a time.

It takes away the pressure to make something and just gives her a space to draw, practise and explore whenever she feels like it.

Just paper, pencils and time.

And honestly, so much happens from something that simple.

Creativity is formed in allowance…

In allowing yourself to simply start.

In allowing them to work when they’re ready.

And draw when they’re inspired.

Practising freely, without pressure to perform or pressure to create.

Paper, masking tape and pencils -

The ultimate open-ended craft activity?

For the whole family?

The process of taping down the paper seems to be key.

The simple act of having the pencils out at the beginning of the day.

The simplest setup allows for the creation.

Inspires, teaches, encourages.

The availability of the resources creates opportunities for mindful drawing and creativity.

Honestly, I’ve been amazed over the past few weeks by how much she gravitates towards mindful drawing in the quiet spaces of her day.

It provides a little bit of relief for her -and for the whole family.

You should give it a go.

And even go as far as taking a little piece of paper for yourself.

You never know what magic might be allowed by that simple act.

SCRAPS AND STICKS

Two easily accessible materials, free or relatively inexpensive.

The prep for this activity was so easy.

The hardest part was collecting the sticks from the other side of the fence - I thankfully didn’t have to do this 🫠

The kids jumped straight in, immediately interested in the ribbon and wool and so excited to choose their colours.

In fact, they were a little too eager, and we had to scramble to help them.

The gold string was particularly striking. It added such a magical little element to the whole activity.

We didn’t even get around to discussing WHAT we were making, but they were so engaged in the PROCESS that it didn’t really matter.

And honestly, I think they’re so beautiful. I love the contrast of nature and highly industrialised ribbon 🎀

It’s such a simple activity, but there was something lovely about watching them choose their colours, work with the materials and slowly transform a stick into something of their own.

Highly recommend.

Today was fun.

But we started a bit wild - conflicts, territorial disputes, all the fun that comes with socialising little people.

Exhausted mummas.
Hungry kiddies.

My snail painting activity was not a big hit to begin with.

But gradually, with time, everyone got involved.

It took a few more materials, mumma’s involvement, and suddenly -

The magic.

Everyone creating in their own unique way.

Learning, calming, communing.

Bliss.

I’ve found that kids never create in quite the way I’m expecting.

They’re always thinking of something completely different to me.

So I’m excited to see what they make from these materials. Will they be snakes, caterpillars, magic wands, or something I can’t even conceive of yet?

But whatever they create, I know this simple wrapping activity is helping develop their fine motor skills, creativity and imagination.

**PAINTING**

Painting with young children…

Messy, messy business.

The potential for disaster is HIGH 😂

And painting in a rental? Even scarier.

Let’s be honest, painting can feel stressful. Sometimes they fly through it, leaving you with a giant mess and wondering where the actual activity went.

But painting at playgroup… that’s a different story.

As long as we dress our littles in clothes we don’t mind getting spattered in, we’re as good as gold.

When children are given the freedom to really explore in an environment that allows for the mess, their creativity can flourish.

And you can actually relax a little, knowing that all that mess is doing something pretty amazing for their development.

**INUNDATED**

I love our family creations, especially our drawing competitions. But goodness gracious, the piles stack up quickly.

I cannot throw any artwork out…

And we live in a studio with minimal storage.

Yet here I am, still keeping it all. I’m sure we’ll find a use for it eventually 😂

Spring Flower Installation 🌸🌼

The kiddies knew exactly what to do with this one.

I personally was impressed with how impactful their creations were when hung together.

Super impactful.

Today’s Spring Garden creation! 🐛

Painting, pastels and collage.

Whilst getting messy and developing our creativity and fine motor skills, we discussed the beginning of spring and how it brings out the flowers and creepy crawlies - it was a super fun morning, with soo much child led goodness.
