Anyone outside teaching who has ever taught someone to do something, sees that explicit instruction has obvious advantages over letting the learner work something out for themselves with minimal guidance. Is that how you'd like your surgeon to have learned to remove your appendix or your electrician to have learned to wire your home? Teaching children is no different despite what some in education try in vain to prove. It is true that it's possible to learn by discovering something for yourself, but it takes a lot of time, is error-prone, and can be frustrating. Is that how we want children's precious time at school used?

11 Years ago, an Australian Dyslexia Documentary called 'Outside the Square' was released. 11 years later, it still feels current in so many ways. In this clip, Brooke Wardana and Julie Mavlian discuss teacher preparedness, with Brooke also addressing constructivist teaching and explicit instruction from the perspective of her early childhood training. I think her comments and watching her teach challenges the lazy straw man characterisations of explicit teaching.
