One of the greatest myths surrounding dyslexia is the idea that it can occur because we are not read to enough as a child.
THIS IS NOT TRUE!
Dyslexia is not something you can ‘catch’ or prevent, just like the quantity and quality of books we are exposed to when young does not determine our future success as readers.
My parents reading to me as a young child and exposing me to literature may have given me a passion for books, as well as helped my vocabulary, oral language and knowledge (not to mention the wonderful emotional experience), but it did not ‘immunise’ me from the challenges of being a struggling reader. Just like the idea that not reading enough to a child will cause dyslexia!
This is a dangerous myth that not only guilts and shames parents but perpetuates the myth that immersing children in language will teach them to read. (Why is it that some people think that exposing children to books will teach them to read when nobody believes that immersing children in classical music will make them concert pianists! 🤔🤔)
Unlike learning to walk and talk, reading does not happen naturally.
Learning to read must be taught and it must be taught in a way that will help EVERY child learn to read, using evidence-based structured literacy programs aligned to the science of reading.
So isn’t it time we bust the myth that immersing children in language will teach every child how to read?
