I will be running two specialised spelling workshops designed for children in upper primary and early high school. These workshops help children develop the deeper knowledge they need to spell with greater accuracy, confidence, and independence in their school work.

As children move through upper primary and high school, they are expected to read and spell increasingly complex words across all subjects. Many of these words rely on understanding suffixes and spelling rules.
โ
When children understand these patterns, they can:
โข spell words more accurately
โข break down longer, more complex words
โข improve their writing across all subjects
โข approach new vocabulary with greater confidence

๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ฝ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ, as much of the academic vocabulary used in upper primary and high school is derived from Latin. In fact over 50% of the English language is Latin so itโs important for your child to be able to read and spell words such as: pollution, population, conclusion, creation, special, patient, to list a few. Understanding these patterns helps children make sense of words rather than relying on memorisation alone.

These workshops are intentionally run in small, carefully supported groups to ensure each child receives individual attention and guidance.
โ
Even children who have not previously felt comfortable learning in groups often do very well because:
โข groups are kept small
โข teaching is explicit and supportive
โข the environment is calm and encouraging
โข confidence is built alongside skills
โ
Many children find it reassuring to learn alongside others who share similar experiences, helping to reduce anxiety and build confidence.

All workshops are led by a specialist teacher trained in structured literacy approaches designed to support children who find spelling difficult, including those with dyslexia.
โ
Concepts are taught clearly and step-by-step, helping children understand the structure of words so they can apply this knowledge independently in their school writing.
โ
Children are also provided with learning materials and structured activities to use at home, helping them consolidate and strengthen what is taught during the workshops.

Workshops will be run once sufficient interest has been received to ensure the group is appropriately matched.
โ
These workshops can also be delivered online, allowing access for families outside the local area or those who prefer to attend from home. If you are interested in the online option, please indicate this on the registration form.

โ
The Orton-Gillingham approach has been used and recommended worldwide for over 80 years.
โ
It is an evidence-based approach developed by Dr Samuel Orton (a neuropsychiatrist) and Anna Gillingham (an educator and psychologist). It was one of the first teaching approaches specifically designed to support struggling readers and children with dyslexia.
โ
Orton-Gillingham is so effective because it breaks reading and spelling down into smaller, manageable skills focused on letters and sounds. Each concept is taught explicitly and learned to mastery before moving on. Lessons are structured, sequential, cumulative, and multisensory, giving children multiple pathways to learn and retain information.
โ
When English is taught in this way, children experience success. The learning sticks and it rebuilds their confidence in themselves and their ability to learn.
โ
Take a look at our testimonials to see the difference the Orton-Gillingham approach has made for our students (link in the comments).
โค๏ธ Heart Words โค๏ธ
โ
With Valentine's Day coming up, thereโs no better time to talk about heart words.
โ
Heart words, aka as sight words, high frequency words, camera words, red words, learned words (depending on what your childโs school calls them!) are those tricky words in English that arenโt spelled the way we would expect when we listen to the sounds.
โ
โsaidโ....โwasโ....โโdoneโ....โwhatโ....and the list goes on.
โ
While many words in English are phonetic and decodable, these words have a part that we can teach ourselves to remember off by โค๏ธ
โ
When learning to read and spell heart words, it is important to:
โ
Identify the part of the word makes sense,
Pinpoint the tricky part,
Explore English rules and the etymology of the word to help explain why the word looks like it does.
โ
Heart words can be tricky until you know how to tackle them.
โ
Does your child struggle with any particular heart words? Drop them in the comments and Iโll break them down for you.
This video brilliantly shows a wordโs etymology and how its pronunciation can shift through history.
