OLD HELENIAN SPOTLIGHT | We would to congratulate Rebecca Blake from Helena College's Class of 2018 on her selection as a finalist in the Premier’s Science Awards 2026 in the Student Scientist of the Year category. The Student Scientist of the Year award recognises an outstanding postgraduate student who has demonstrated a commitment to science at an early stage and shows great promise in reaching the highest levels of excellence.

Rebecca is a PhD candidate at The University of Western Australia, and is pioneering research into how advanced materials respond to extreme pressure. By uncovering the molecular "blueprints" of underexplored porous frameworks, her work accelerates the design of next-generation materials essential for carbon capture, renewable energy storage, and sustainable catalysis. A multi-award-winning researcher and mentor, Rebecca collaborates with national facilities to solve global environmental challenges. Her findings position Western Australia at the forefront of stimuli-responsive material science, driving innovations that support a decarbonized and technologically advanced future.

We are very proud of her achievements, and wish her every success as her career continues!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY | Today's photos are courtesy of a past parent, Brenda Keefe, who kindly donated number of her photos from the school's early years in Glen Forrest. Brenda's son, Jonathan, attended Helena College and was among the first students to commence at the Glen Forrest Campus when it opened in 1988, and was in the first Year 12 group to graduate in 1992. Thanks so much to Brenda for sharing these (and others) with us. If you have school memorabilia or just your personal recollections, please feel free to get in touch, by emailing [email protected] or [email protected].

FRIDAY FLASHBACK | We have something different for you today! Can you identify these locations on Helena College's Glen Forrest Campus? The images were created by our Year 10 Visual Arts students as part of their work in linocut printmaking. The students ventured out across the Senior School and photographed buildings and spaces perspective before transferring their favourite image onto a lino block. The lino cuts were then printed with black ink onto paper. Can you recognise these College landmarks? Tell us in the comments!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY | 1974 | In 1974, colour TV was on its way to our homes, Kung Fu Fighting and Ball Room Blitz were on the radio, the Perth Entertainment Centre opened and you could buy a loaf of white bread for 20 cents. Here at Helena College, there was fun to be had out on the oval of the Darlington Campus. What do you remember about 1974?

BREAKING GROUND TODAY, INSPIRING TOMORROW | Construction is set to begin in the coming days on our new Senior School classroom and multipurpose building at the Glen Forrest Campus.

The new two-storey facility will feature four modern, flexible classrooms and a large multipurpose space designed to support a wide range of learning and community activities. With accessible design, including lift access, the building represents another important investment in the future of Helena College and our commitment to providing outstanding learning environments.

We look forward to welcoming students into the new building late next year and will share regular construction updates and photos as the project progresses.

Thank you to our College Council for its continued support and to our community for your patience during construction. Please note that parking near the Year 6 nature play area will be restricted during building works, and parents are requested to please use the Student Drop Off/Pick Up Zones on Bilgoman Road.

FRIDAY FLASHBACK | Let's go back 20 years and explore the world of Robotics. According to the 2006 edition of the Reflections yearbook, Helena College had 27 students participate in the Robocup Junior Competition. The nine teams entered either the Dance, Rescue or Soccer categories. Out of the nine teams, five went on to the semi-finals. Were you one of our Robotics stars? Share your memories with us!

PS: The Helena Robotics Club is still going, and will be participating in the Robocup Junior competition in August this year!
