Yesterday, our Concert Band students had a fantastic opportunity to visit Fort Street High School and combine with their Concert Band for an afternoon of music-making, collaboration and mentoring.🎸🎺🎻🥁
Led by Dr Matthew Manchester and Lachlan Mahoney, our students were mixed throughout the ensemble, sitting alongside older musicians playing their instruments, rehearsing together and learning from one another.
There was plenty of musical learning happening, but perhaps the most valuable part was giving our students a chance to see what comes next.
For a primary school student, high-school band can seem like something a long way off in the future. Yesterday, our students could actually see the next step. They could hear what years of continued playing can lead to, learn from older musicians and experience being part of a larger ensemble.
High-school band wasn’t an abstract idea. They were sitting in it.
At Glebe, we want our Band Program to do more than teach students to play their instruments. We want them to see themselves as musicians, experience the joy of making music with others, and discover where continuing with music might take them.
A huge thank you to Matthew, Lachlan and the Fort Street High School musicians for being so generous and welcoming with our young musicians. We hope there will be many more opportunities to make music together.
