📖🔖 Readers Cup Competition 📖🔖

For the first time in Toolooa State High School's history, students participated in the annual Readers Cup competition, held at Gladstone State High School on the 8th of June.

Toolooa entered two teams in the competition, with one team competing in the Year 7/8 division and another in the Year 9/10 division.

Readers Cup continues to be one of Queensland's most popular reading competitions, with 911 teams from 19 regions taking part this year, including 246 Year 7/8 teams and 173 Year 9/10 teams. Across the state, more than 4,300 students participated and collectively read almost 18,000 books in preparation for the event.
Readers Cup provides students with a fantastic opportunity to discover new books, challenge themselves as readers, and connect with students from other schools who share a passion for reading.
Ariel, Sophia, Evie, Lewis, Adele, Manha, Kya Jill, Emily, Georgie and Emily represented Toolooa State High School with pride, demonstrating excellent teamwork. After weeks of preparation, they put their literary knowledge to the test across five challenging rounds of questions based on this year's selected novels.

A special congratulations goes to our Year 9/10 team, who achieved an impressive 5th place overall in a highly competitive field. Our Year 7/8 team also performed strongly, finishing in 12th place and showing great determination and collaboration throughout the day.

Students were also fortunate to participate in a creative writing workshop and Q&A session with author Sarah Armstrong, whose novel Run was one of the Year 7/8 Readers Cup titles. This was a valuable opportunity for students to gain insight into the writing process and hear directly from a published author.

Congratulations to all students involved for the way they represented our school and upheld our core values of Respect, Responsibility and Achievement. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and would also like to thank Gladstone State High School for hosting such a well-organised and enjoyable event.

We look forward to participating in Readers Cup again next year.

As Reconciliation Week 2026 draws to a close, lets take a look at how Toolooa celebrated.

Movies in the Hub.
We screened Bran Nue Dae. I think I showed my age when I was asking the students if they knew any of the Actors, and I got puzzled and blank expressions on their faces.

We set the Hub up with the couches, some cushions and pillows and served popcorn.

It truly was great to see all of the students sitting quietly and enjoying the movie…. Even if they didn’t know anyone in it. There may have been a sing along from some of the staff up the back that did know the movie.

Aurizon Sausage Sizzle.
We are very lucky to have such amazing Industry partners. Each year, Aurizon comes to celebrate Reconciliation Week at Toolooa, and this year’s theme “All In” definitely rang true. The Team arrived bright and early, with enough time to have a tour of the Yarning Circle and its progress and tour the new Hub. Then it was all hands-on deck, prepping and getting what seemed to be an endless supply of sausages and bread ready for the hungry students at first break. Aurizon and QAL set up a stall so that students could chat about traineeships and apprenticeships, and Headspace also came along to chat to the students.

Dear children who have missed their beloved CCBs over the past three days - GOOD NEWS - the tuckshop is re-opening tomorrow (Thursday). Online orders have been reactivated.

Thanks to the hard working team who got the area back to working condition.
