Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Dorrie Day 2026 🖤💛❤️💚💙🤍

One of the best parts of working with children is seeing the impact of simply showing up.

On Dorrie Day, we made bracelets and necklaces, shared stories, yarned and connected with so many children. Some made them for themselves, while others proudly created one for their mum, or grandma while we yarned with them.

The highlight? A student skipping over saying, “Yes! You guys are here!” while proudly showing us the bracelet they made with us last year, ready to make another ❤️

A beautiful reminder that trust and meaningful relationships with our First Nations children and community are built by turning up, listening, connecting and creating moments that matter. 💛🖤❤️💚💙🤍

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

Everybody feels angry sometimes 😡

In children anger can often be an expression of big emotions or frustration, leading to tantrums or sometimes violence.

It's a really useful parenting skill to have a plan on how to manage outbursts and stay calm yourself. It can help you and your child cope with them in the moment and sometimes even prevent them from happening.

The Raising Healthy Minds app 🧠😊 contains information on how to help your child communicate their emotions and tips for parents who find themselves losing patience.

Remember to stop and connect with your child. By managing your own anger you can help them manage theirs.
