2026 CQU WorldSkills Competition – Welding & Fabrication

A huge congratulations to our Walz Group apprentices who recently competed in the 2026 CQU WorldSkills Competition in Welding & Fabrication!

The competition gave our apprentices the opportunity to put their technical skills, knowledge and attention to detail to the test, competing against other apprentices in a challenging environment.

Cody Bailey – Silver Medal🥈
Cody competed in Fabrication and took home a fantastic Silver Medal!

Caleb Holmwood - Bronze Medal🥉
Caleb completed in Fabrication and Welding. An outstanding achievement across both categories.

Nathan Taylor – Competed in Fabrication.
Competing in WorldSkills is a great opportunity for apprentices to challenge themselves, build confidence, gain valuable competition experience and showcase the skills they’re developing throughout their apprenticeship.

We’re proud to see our apprentices stepping up to the challenge and representing their trades so well.

A big thank you to Walz for encouraging and supporting the apprentices to take on the challenge of WorldSkills, giving them the confidence and opportunity to put their skills to the test.

At ATQLD, we understand that supporting an apprentice or trainee is about more than just their training and employment. Their wellbeing is equally important.

Our Field Officers work closely with apprentices and trainees and can often be one of the first people to notice when someone may need additional support. Keeping our mental health knowledge and skills current, help our team approach these situations with greater confidence, understanding and care.

ATQLD Business Services Manager, Ray Cooper believes mental health refresher training is a valuable tool for our Field Officers, particularly given the strong relationships they build with apprentices, trainees and host employers.
Having knowledge and the confidence to identify concerns, approach difficult conversations appropriately and understand where to direct someone for further assistance is important part of the support we provide.
A sincere thank you to Robynne for her time, knowledge and expertise in providing this training to our team.

What a day!

The ATQLD & MSI teams joined the GEA Charity Golf Day for 18 holes of golf, plenty of laughs, and great company, all for a fantastic cause, all funds raised on the day went to Roseberry Dignity Hub.

We may not have taken anything home for the 18 holes, but our outfits were so awesome we took home BEST DRESSED! 🏆

Josh Burnett and Cody Bailey are smashing out their final block at CQU Gladstone and getting closer to the finish line!

Josh and Cody have put in plenty of hard work throughout their apprenticeships and have done a fantastic job on their pot belly projects, showcasing the skills and techniques they’ve developed along the way.

A big part of their development has been the support and knowledge they’ve received from the CQU Fabrication teachers, who have helped Josh and Cody build their skills, understand the trade and improve their fabrication techniques throughout their training.

As ATQLD apprentices hosted to Walz Group , the boys have been getting the best of both worlds — plenty of hands-on experience at Walz, backed up by the knowledge and skills they’re picking up through their fabrication training at CQU.

Great work, boys! Keep smashing it out and finish strong!

We are looking for a qualified Trainer and Assessor with proven industry experience in the construction/mining sector.

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝:

• TAE40116 or TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
• Ideally 5+ years' experience as a Trainer and Assessor
• Demonstrated industry currency, skills, knowledge and relevant qualifications
• Intermediate PC skills
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• Excellent time management and organisational skills
• Current Police Check and Working with Children Check, or willingness to obtain

The successful candidate should have the ability to train the following qualifications:

- HRWL Assessor Accreditation
- First Aid / CPR / LVR
- Chainsaw / Pole Saw
- Do***ng, Rigging and Crane qualifications
- Gantry Crane and Vehicle Loading Crane qualifications
- RII Earthmoving competencies including Skid Steer, Excavator, Front End Loader, Backhoe, Dozer and Roller
- Light Vehicle / 4WD
- Load Restraint

𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬:

Ability and willingness to travel outside the Rockhampton region for day and overnight site-based training as required by the company.

Reporting to the Manager, the Trainer and Assessor will be responsible for the professional delivery of nationally accredited and recognised training and compliance within the engaged industry.

𝐃𝐚𝐲-𝐭𝐨-𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:

• Deliver structured, relevant, and engaging training sessions to all learners and assist them in achieving their training objectives through assessments, observations and mentoring.
• Create, implement and manage individual training plans
• Complete administrative duties and training documentation as required
