"Mummy, I'm scared." 😒

You stop at the door.

Of course you do. Because what kind of parent walks away from a scared child? πŸ’”

But here's something I want you to think about. πŸ‘‡

Your toddler has been watching you at sleep time for a very long time. πŸ‘€

They've noticed what makes you hesitate.
They've noticed what makes you turn around.
They've figured out β€” not deliberately, but VERY effectively β€” which words stop you at the door every single time.

"I'm scared" is one of the most powerful ones. πŸ’₯

Now β€” is the fear real? πŸ€”

Sometimes, yes. Toddlers have vivid imaginations and developmental fears are genuine. I'm not dismissing that.

But here's what I know after 10 years and 2,000+ families:

The most common reasons toddlers become suddenly "scared" at bedtime are:

1️⃣ They are overtired and sleep-deprived
Kids who aren't sleeping well are genuinely more prone to fears. 😴 Fix the sleep β€” and in most cases the fear reduces on its own.

2️⃣ The bedroom has no positive association 🏠
If the only thing that happens in their bedroom is being left there alone β€” of course it feels threatening.

3️⃣ Screen time before bed πŸ“±
Toddler brains process visual content completely differently to adults. Even completely innocent content can translate into bedtime fear and nightmares.

I once had a child having night terrors from β€” Peppa Pig. 🐷
Not a horror film.
Peppa. Pig. πŸ˜…

In my latest blog I explain:
πŸ‘‰ How to tell if the fear is real β€” or a very clever strategy
πŸ‘‰ Why the bedroom environment matters more than you think
πŸ‘‰ The step-by-step approach that helps without dismissing the fear AND without giving in to it

Save this post if you hear "I'm scared" at bedtime every single night. πŸ’›

And drop a πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ in the comments if your toddler has a signature phrase they use to keep you in the room β€” I'd love to hear it! πŸ‘‡

Do you have a hard time getting your baby or toddler to sleep? Do they wake up in the night and fight to stay awake? Are you tired of trying all sorts of solutions to help, such as putting them to bed earlier, or not letting them a nap during the day, only to find that it doesn’t help at all?

What I wish someone had told me

If I could go back and give my younger self advice, this is what I'd say:
πŸ’œ You don't need to be perfect.
πŸ’œ Sleep problems are common.
πŸ’œ Asking for help is okay.
πŸ’œ Consistency matters more than perfection.
πŸ’œ Things do get easier.
When my twins were babies, I spent far too much time worrying that I was doing everything wrong.
The truth is that most parents are doing far better than they think.
πŸ’œ Follow Happy Sleepers for daily baby and toddler sleep tips and facts.

πŸ₯ˆ Before I helped 2,000 families, I struggled with my own twins

Many people know me as Christine from Happy Sleepers, but my journey started long before I became a Baby Sleep Specialist.
It started with my own twins.
Like many parents, I experienced the exhaustion, frustration and overwhelm that comes with a baby who struggles to sleep.
As a Registered Nurse and Midwife, I knew how important sleep was, but I quickly realised that knowing sleep and teaching sleep were two very different things.
Once I understood awake times, sleep pressure, self-settling and healthy sleep habits, everything changed.
That experience sparked a passion that eventually became Happy Sleepers.
Today, I've helped more than 2,000 families improve their baby's sleep and I'd love to help yours too.

Most parents don't believe an 8-month-old can do this.

πŸ’œ 8 Month old Little Boy
He was placed into his cot fully awake and less than 10 minutes later he was asleep.
No rocking.
No feeding to sleep.
No patting.
No crying.
Just a baby who has learned the valuable skill of falling asleep independently.
One of the biggest misconceptions about baby sleep is that babies need to be completely asleep before being put into their cot.
In reality, babies sleep best when they learn how to fall asleep where they're going to wake up.
When babies can fall asleep independently at bedtime, they are much more likely to settle themselves between sleep cycles overnight too.
This is one of the key foundations I teach inside Happy Sleepers and one of the reasons so many families see such incredible results.

Best money spent." πŸ₯Ή

πŸ’œ These messages never get old.

Every screenshot represents a family who was once exhausted, overwhelmed and wondering if things would ever improve.

Parents who were dreading bedtime.

Parents who were surviving on broken sleep.

Parents who felt like they had tried everything.

And then something changed.

Not because of a magic solution.

But because they finally had a clear plan, support and the confidence to stay consistent.

Helping families get more sleep isn't just about better nights.

It's about happier babies, more confident parents and families enjoying life again.

These messages are the reason I love what I do.

Could feeding to sleep be causing the night wakings?

It's not the feed that's the problem.

It's the feeding to sleep.

One of the most common sleep associations I see is feeding to sleep.

When babies are consistently fed all the way to sleep, they often begin to associate the feed with falling asleep rather than filling their tummy.

So when they wake between sleep cycles overnight, they look for the same thing that helped them fall asleep in the first place.

Another feed.

This doesn't mean overnight feeds are always a problem.

Many babies genuinely need overnight feeds, especially when they're younger.

The problem occurs when feeding becomes the only way a baby knows how to fall asleep.

That's why one of the foundations I teach inside Happy Sleepers is gradually separating feeding and sleeping and teaching babies how to fall asleep independently.

The goal is for your baby to think:

🍼 "I'm hungry, I need a feed."

Not:

😴 "I need a feed so I can go to sleep."

The secret isn't getting your baby asleep. It's teaching them HOW to fall asleep.
One of the biggest misconceptions about baby sleep is that babies need to be rocked, fed, patted or cuddled completely asleep before being put into their cot.

The truth?

Babies can learn to fall asleep independently.

This little one was placed into the cot fully awake and settled to sleep on their own.

When babies learn how to fall asleep independently at bedtime, they are much more likely to settle themselves between sleep cycles overnight too.

This is one of the core foundations I teach inside Happy Sleepers.

"I remember feeling completely exhausted and wondering if things would ever get better."

This mum felt exactly the same.

I was so exhausted I didn't know what to do anymore.

Frequent night waking, short naps, constant settling... until she followed a simple step-by-step sleep plan.

Today her baby sleeps independently and the whole family is getting the rest they need.

If you're currently surviving on broken sleep, know that things can change.

Don't let your baby doze off during the feed

Don't let your baby fall asleep during the feed.

One of the biggest mistakes I see parents make is allowing their baby to drift off while feeding.

The problem is that even a very short micronap can reduce sleep pressure and make it harder for your baby to settle properly in the cot.

If your baby's eyes start closing during a feed:

πŸ‘Ά Remove them from the breast
πŸ‘Ά Take the bottle out
πŸ‘Ά Tickle their feet
πŸ‘Ά Sit them up
πŸ‘Ά Turn the lights on

It doesn't matter what you do.

The goal is to keep your baby fully awake.

Remember, we don't want babies falling asleep during the feed.

We want them falling asleep in the cot.

The feed ends.

Sleep starts in the cot.

This is one of the foundations I teach inside Happy Sleepers and one of the reasons so many families see dramatic improvements in their baby's sleep.

My baby couldn't sleep without me

✨ REAL MUM. REAL RESULTS. ✨

Before Happy Sleepers, this mum felt completely stuck.

Her baby relied heavily on her to get to sleep and needed a dummy to settle.

Like so many exhausted parents, she knew something needed to change but wasn't sure where to start.

After following the Happy Sleepers program and gaining the confidence to consistently apply the techniques, everything changed.

πŸ’€ Sleeping in his own room
πŸ’€ Sleeping in his own cot
πŸ’€ Sleeping from 7pm until 7am
πŸ’€ Enjoying a 2-hour daytime nap

Sometimes parents don't need more information.

They need a clear plan and the confidence to follow it.

That's exactly what Happy Sleepers provides.
