Travelling 1,200km, a few days of country roads, Bush Summit conversations, coffee, scones (!!) and talking all things continence, independence and access.
Beyond the presentation itself, the real highlight was connecting with allied health professionals, educators and families finding creative ways to support kids despite the unique challenges of rural and remote practice.
Some of the most important conversations in healthcare happen hundreds of kilometres from the nearest capital city.
Grateful for the chance to learn from — and alongside — the people supporting children and families across regional, rural and remote Australia. 🧡
Some people switch on airplane mode. We switch on hotspot mode.
Travelling with 5 behaviour analysts and business owners. A good reminder that leadership isn’t confined to an office, instead it’s the way people show up, wherever they are.
The conversations don’t stop when the conference ends. Ideas, problem-solving, supporting teams, delivering quality sessions, improving services, and finding better ways to help children and families.
Values aren’t words on a website. They’re where you choose to spend your time, energy, and attention. We chose the The Eleanor Bryant Memorial Fund Bush Summit.

Early in my career, I thought toilet training was simply another skill to teach.
Over time, families taught me otherwise.
Continence affects education, community participation, independence, healthcare access, confidence, family wellbeing, and quality of life.
When I think about successful outcomes, I don’t think about dry underwear.
I think about a child being able to participate more fully in the life they want to live.
That’s why I care so much about this work.

Same Play, New Way ✨
Not every behaviour needs to be stopped.
Sometimes, what looks like a “problem behaviour” is actually a child meeting a very real need in the best way they currently know how.
In this new series, we’ll share simple examples of how we can:
➡️ Understand the why behind a behaviour
➡️ Keep the same need being met
➡️ Teach a safer, more practical alternative
Because the goal isn’t always less behaviour.
The goal is often better tools.
Today’s example: chewing 🦷
Many children chew because it provides sensory input, helps with regulation, or simply feels good. Rather than focusing on stopping it, we can redirect it to safer options like chew jewellery, crunchy foods, frozen fruit, or reusable straws.
Same play. New way.
What sensory-seeking behaviour should I cover next?
💧 Water play
🏃 Running and crashing
🎵 Repetitive sounds and music
🫧 Bubbles
🌀 Spinning
Save this for later and send it to a parent, teacher, therapist, or support worker who might find it helpful.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that constipation is only a bowel issue.
In reality, constipation can affect participation, behaviour, toilet training, confidence, family routines and quality of life.
Children may present with:
• toilet refusal
• withholding their poo
• accidents, smearing or soiling
• distress around toileting
• behavioural changes
Long-term constipation can also lead to overflow soiling, where stool leaks around retained stool in the bowel. Many children genuinely don’t feel this happening.
When toileting challenges arise, it’s important that we consider possible medical contributors alongside behavioural, developmental, environmental, and communication factors.
Assessment before intervention.
Always.
