The Dame Mary Gilmore Writing Competition judges gifted each child a book to acknowledge the high quality of this year’s entries.

Harrison shared this photo of him reading his thank you gift on the train to Sydney. What has your child been reading during the holidays?

So you might be wondering, what is The DMG anyway? Every year children P-6 prepare written submissions for a competition titled Dame Mary Gilmore after our school's namesake.

Most years we research Mary Gilmore herself, and then write to an unrelated but interesting topic or theme. This year we mixed it up in response to children (and a few teachers) expressing their interest in books by Anh Do which turned into a whole school author study and research project into his many other achievements and contributions to Australian society (not unlike Mary Gilmore herself).

Following the conclusion of this term-long project we asked the children, "What Should People Know About Anh Do?" Anh

Today we celebrated the amazing writing contributions of our students in the 2026 Dame Mary Gilmore Writing Competition (DMG)! 🎉

This year’s theme celebrated the incredible Anh Do — artist, author, comedian, actor and an amazing human — giving our students plenty of inspiration to get their creative minds working! 🌟

And what a challenge they gave our judges! From imaginative narratives and heartfelt letters to informative reports and everything in between, our students showcased an incredible variety of writing styles, ideas and voices. 📝✨

With so many creative, thoughtful and engaging pieces to read, we certainly didn’t make the judges’ job easy! 😍

A huge congratulations to all of our students who put their ideas onto paper and shared their writing. Your creativity, effort and willingness to have a go are something to be very proud of. 👏📖

The Night #1 menu included icecream. What a shame none of the children like icecream…
