Autistic people can experience overwhelm in many ways.
Sensory input like lights, sounds, textures, or smells can become intense. Social interactions or masking can be draining. Managing multiple tasks or sudden changes may feel challenging. Strong emotions can build quickly and feel overwhelming. Processing large amounts of information at once can be difficult. Quiet time and downtime are often needed to recover and recharge.
Overwhelm is not a weakness - it reflects neurological differences, not a flaw.
๐ก Supporting Autistic people with clear communication, understanding sensory needs, and allowing space for rest can help us thrive.
[ID: Against a moss green background, the Reframing Autism logo appears at the top, followed by the heading 'Overwhelm can feel like...' Beneath the heading, five circular text boxes surround a side-profile illustration of a personโs head, with arrows linking each box: 1. โLights, sounds, textures and smells all feel intenseโ; 2. โI feel drained by social interactionsโ; 3. โIโm struggling to manage multiple tasks or sudden changesโ; 4. โStrong emotions hit me quickly and feel overwhelmingโ; 5. โI need quiet time to recover and rechargeโ.]

Research consistently shows that 50โ80% of autistic people experience significant sleep issues.
Some fall asleep, but wake up repeatedly throughout the night,
and others may wake up ungodly early and donโt go back to sleep.
And some of us cycle through periods of being awake for 20+ hours at a time, completely exhausted but unable to โshut off.โ
Autistic brains often have differences in melatonin production and arousal regulation.
โฆMeaning that sleep issues are NOT a choice, nor are they a result of poor discipline.
We just often have bodies donโt follow the same rhythm as everyone elseโs.
Iโm writing this after being awake for over 24 hours straight.
And I promise I followed all the best practices for good โsleep hygiene.โ
But sometimes, my brain just doesnโt power down.
And I know Iโm not the only one.
If youโre an autistic person who dreads bedtime,
or a parent who feels like every night is a battle, know that this is real, itโs very common, and you are not failing. ๐ค

Supporting autistic kids at school. This is a great way to communicate with your child's teacher ๐ฉต
I was that parent who ended up talking to the teacher every single day, before and after school.
'This is what our night and morning was like, this is where my kid is at today. Please look after them by ... '
At the end of the day it was the teacher telling me something from the day. 'They had a good day' or 'they didn't meet expectations today.'
I always wanted specifics.
I wanted to know what had happened, what those expectations were, what supports were in place, what the adult's response was, if the adult had tried to be flexible or understanding.
I didn't go in looking to start fights.
I wasn't trying to be hard work.
I needed information about what was happening at school. Because my kid wasn't fine there.
I created this teacher-parent communication template. I know that every teacher won't have time to use it for every kid. But if a particular student is really struggling at school, struggling to attend, and the adults are trying to support them, I think this resource could be helpful.
I hope.
It's a move away from standard behaviour slips, at any rate.

The NDIS is changing how plans are created and funded. These updates aim to improve consistency, transparency, and fairness โ but itโs completely understandable if the changes feel confusing or overwhelming.

Spoon Theory is a way of explaining how energy works for many autistic and other neurodivergent people, as well as people with disability, chronic illness, or mental health differences.
Each โspoonโ represents a unit of energy.
Daily tasks โ getting dressed, social interaction, sensory processing, transitions, decision-making โ all use spoons.
Some days start with fewer spoons.
Some tasks cost more spoons than expected.
And once the spoons are gone, theyโre gone.
This isnโt about motivation or attitude.
Itโs about ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ถ๐๐.
โจ A neurodiversity-affirming approach means:
โข Planning days with energy in mind
โข Reducing unnecessary demands
โข Building in rest and regulation
โข Respecting when someone is out of spoons
When we understand energy instead of pushing through, we create safer, more supportive environments.
At ๐๐ณ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐๐ต๐๐ฎ๐๐, we view regulation, wellbeing, and support through a lens of understanding โ not expectation.

Before we ask for:
โข learning
โข listening
โข emotional control
โข flexibility
โข behaviour change
We need ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ด๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป.
A nervous system in overwhelm canโt access skills, follow instructions, or meet expectations โ no matter how capable someone is.
Regulation comes from:
โข felt safety
โข connection and trust
โข sensory needs being supported
โข predictable environments
โข co-regulation, not correction
When we prioritise regulation first, expectations become more realistic โ and support becomes more effective.
โจ Regulation isnโt something to โearn.โ

So often, adults focus on the โtop levelsโ of the developmental tower โ things like independence, self-management, emotional control, or executive functioning.
But for neurodivergent kids, those higher-level skills can only grow when the
Safety. Regulation. Connection. Predictability. Understanding.
These are the building blocks that everything else rests on.
If youโre noticing challenges in the higher levels, the goal isnโt to push harder โ itโs to ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐น๐ผ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ต.
And hereโs the truth: many neurodivergent kids will always need accommodations, especially in areas like executive functioning.
Accommodations are not a failure.
Not for the child.
Not for the parent.
Not for the teacher.
Not for the workplace.
Accommodations are ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น, ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ณ๐๐น, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐น supports that allow neurodivergent people to thrive in the world as they are โ not as theyโre expected to be.
๐ Supporting neurodivergent people through accommodations is powerful.
Itโs how real inclusion grows.

Self-talk isnโt โjust talking to yourselfโ โ itโs a powerful tool for regulation, planning, social rehearsal and self-understanding.
For autistic individuals, self-talk can be a bridge between internal experience and external action.
It can soothe sensory overwhelm, guide next steps, support transitions, and build confidence.
At Affirming Pathways, we see self-talk as a strength โ not something to hide.
When we honour it, listen to it, and make space for it, we support ๐ฎ๐๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ด๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป and ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ณ๐๐น ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐๐ต.

Autism inclusion goes beyond individual support.
Itโs about reshaping systems, attitudes, and environments so autistic people are not just accommodated, but genuinely included. ๐
When we transform the culture around us - in schools, workplaces, and communities - we make space for Autistic people to thrive, lead, and belong. ๐
