⭐CHESS COMPETITION T1 RESULTS ⭐
Over the course of Term 1, students from Years 7 – 12 competed in a Chess Competition held in the Library during lunchtime.

Playing chess competitively teaches students how to handle defeat gracefully and how to be resilient. The students participating displayed great sportsmanship and chess skills.
At the end of Term, the Grand Final was played between Lennon (Y12) and Jessica (Y8).

🎉Congratulations Lennon on a game well played and winner of the 2022 Chess Competition. 🤩

😂"Oh no, Miss. I've hurt my leg!'

Using special effects (SFX) is great fun and in the last week before the holidays, students had the opportunity to create realistic wounds that looked pretty gruesome!

*Parents please note - no students were injured during this activity. Just a whole lot of fun! 😂

⭐Work Experience⭐

School is not for everyone and sometimes a more personal approach is what’s needed. The Vocational Individualised Program is an amazing program that helps students re-focus on their education.
Opportunities are provided to access work experience and focus is placed on individual aims to encourage and develop strategies to develop confidence and achieve those goals

Here is what some of the students had to say about their work experience this term.

Emily – @AgWest
“I enjoyed working at Agwest and learning new things about the machinery and DBS parts. One of my favourite things to do is getting up in the tractors and connecting them to the machinery so we can work on them.”

Richard - @Schmick Auto Electrics
“At work experience I do many different things like taking the bolts out of things so we can install new things. At Schmick Auto Electrics everyone is nice and always willing to come and help me to learn how to do it properly.”

Bailey – @JMH Group
“The things I like the most about work experience is welding with the boys. The people there are kind and respectful to everyone. I also like the smell when you're welding, all that makes me feel like home. I love working with the boys at JMH Mechanical.”

Sachin – @KICK Solutions
“At KICK Solutions I have learnt numerous new skills, for example, I have learnt how to use a stanely knife correctly. KICK Solutions is a fun place to work and I like learning new skills.”

Lachlan – @Tangent Building Services
“What I like about work experience is the people I work with. Ben is my boss, White is a qualified chippy, Dan is a third-year apprentice and Cowan is a first year apprentice. I get along with all of them.”

Sam - @Lenane Holding
“On work placement I have learnt about how parts are stored for the machinery, how to drive different machines. I like fixing machines, as I enjoyed learning how the different parts work. It’s a welcoming environment because everyone is helpful. “

Appointed earlier this year, the Commissioner Jacqueline McGowan-Jones visited Geraldton Senior High School to hear to what our students have got to say about the issues impacting them.

With a long history of working in education, child protection and Indigenous affairs, Jacqueline is passionate about improving the future of our children and young people. And since her appointment she has been visiting many regional towns to speak with young people to gauge an understanding of the issues faced in regional communities.

High Interest in Vocational Education and Training

We have 147 senior students participating in a wide range of vocational education certificates as part of their WACE this year.
Hazel Snell, Program Coordinator, said 'it is one our largest groups that we've had involved in the Vocational Education Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) Programs at Central Regional TAFE for a long time."

Over the past two years there has been huge demand in the Electrotechnology field across the Midwest, that we've seen the return of the pre-apprenticeship course. With only 12 spots available for this course we are fortunate to have a group of seniors participating in this Certificate course.

Here is what some of the students had to say about their work experience this term.

Bim @Sun City Plumbing
“I enjoyed learning how to do the job. I learnt to cut pipes faster and straighter than before. I was taught how to install a tap and how to fix a leak inside the wall. I’ve enjoyed my time there and I hope to learn more later.”

Azaya @Reece Plumbing Geraldton
“I liked work experience at Reece, meeting new people and getting to know the plumbers. I learnt about parts and where they were placed. The environment is friendly, and everyone gets along. But the thing I liked the most is getting to know all the plumbers and tradies that come into Reece.”

Bella – @Shampers at Three
“I got hands-on experience as a hairdresser. I learnt about hairdressing and beauty therapy. I liked the work placement because the girls are so nice and friendly. I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to work at a salon.”

Jyo @Lots R Motors
“I did work experience at Lots R Motors throughout term one and the environment is very nice. I have learnt how to change the oil and brake fluid, change the rotors, and brake pads. I have learnt about safety in the workshop because that’s important. I really enjoyed working with customers cars and I would like to be a mechanic in the future.”

Jp – AgWest Ltd.
“I did work experience at AgWest which was really friendly. They are all very nice, always saying ‘Hi’ in the mornings and asking about school. The workshop was really hot which wasn’t that good. I like working inside with the aircon.”
