In Term 4, 2023 the STARS students spent a day at Central Regional TAFE as part of the Year 9 Career Taster Program.

The students completed the Accredited Course in Early Career Discovery, a six-hour accredited qualification, completing the assessment to achieve the unit of competency โ€“ Undertake early career discovery.

The students completed the activities in the โ€˜Your Career Passportโ€™ that focussed on three key areas:
1. self-awareness and discovery of career interests;
2. an exploration of pathways to contemporary and emerging skills and careers; and
3. identification and use of career planning tools and activities.

This exposure to the possible career options and pathways can assist the students to make informed decisions regarding subject selections for Year 11 and 12 and further Certificate I qualification choices in Semester Two of Year 10, as part of the Aboriginal School Based Traineeship program.

The STARS girls also toured the facilities at TAFE, looking through the faculty areas where they could potentially be studying in Semester Two, if they are selected for the ASBT Certificate I Program in Year 10.

All students that were enrolled in the accredited course and gained the Unit of Competency, were given a certificate from Central Regional TAFE.

In Term 4 2023, the 9.1 and 9.2 English classes participated in a 2-day Career Taster excursion at Central Regional TAFE on Monday and Tuesday in Week 6. The team from Tripod Enterprise Education travelled from Melbourne, Victoria and delivered The Studio Work Experience Podcast Series.

J Block at TAFE was transformed into a workplace. Students became the โ€˜employeesโ€™ and the Tripod Team โ€˜the Bossesโ€™. Students were engaged in a student led career exploration project and were tasked with creating a Podcast Series.

To create the podcast, students interviewed local business owners and representatives from a range of sector and industries around Geraldton. Groups prepared by conducting research to assist in developing a set of career focussed questions to ask, then explore in more detail. With interviews complete, students developed and produced their Podcast.

The Podcasts were presented to parents/guardians and teachers at a Showcase Evening. A panel was convened to judge each presentation. It was a close contest, and the top Podcasts were โ€˜The Coffee didnโ€™t Helpโ€™ (Fatimah, Shaniah, Chloe and Kayden), โ€˜Stick Figuring it Outโ€™ (Kayley, Sam, Chloe and Livinia) and โ€˜HLN โ€“ Your Career Queries are our Career Convosโ€™ (Hannah, Lincoln and Noah).

The aim of this program was to provide a meaningful work experience to inspire students to better understand themselves, their enterprise skills, their passions and make clearer connections between why they are at school and the future they want. It has been designed to inspire students to become โ€˜career curiousโ€™ and make informed choices about subject selections and future pathways.

A musical event that took place in the GSHS Theatre and coordinated by Music teacher James Booth was out of this world and will hopefully create the foundation for similar events in 2024. The IMSS staff, Josh Crothers, Anne Williams, Alida Wright and Leonie Courtney also played a big part in preparing the students for a brilliant afternoon of music.

The program was varied and catered for groups that were as different as the rock band and the flute ensemble. The presentation of songs and music played was of a high quality. Lighting was controlled by Cooper Butler Henderson and the sound by Caleb McCamish both of whom did a clever job at manipulating the complicated electronic gear. The auditorium was full of parents and families. It was lovely to see Principal Karena Shearing and staff Levah Bairstow, Narelle Bate, Jed Faeldan and Kartini Signa giving added support.

Congratulations to all involved ๐ŸŽต๐ŸŽถ

The year 10 and 11 COMPASS students have participated in a nine week program called Passports to Employment (P2E). The program was created as a pilot by a small group, including Mrs Tioke, 5 years ago, and has grown and developed further each year. Now it is run by the City of Greater Geraldton and various stakeholders from the high schools and Geraldton community. The students from GSHS, Champion Bay SHS, Nagle College and Holland St School, have the opportunity, each week, to be involved in new experiences that will assist them in developing the skills and confidence to make choices for their future and to make new connections with other students and members of the community. These activities included:

Visits to:
TAFE โ€“ visit the Animal Studies area and tour of the campus
BCMI โ€“ learn about fishing operations
Wildlife park โ€“ how to care for the animals and running of the business
Geraldton Port Authority โ€“ port operations and tug boats
Checking in at the airport โ€“ the process of checking in to a flight and going through security
Geraldton Museum โ€“ history of Geraldton
Queens Park Theatre โ€“ back stage operations, use of lighting and sound, volunteer performances from the students.
Kmart for interview clothes โ€“ to wear during mock interviews to practice applying for a job

This all amalgamated into a final graduation ceremony where the students dressed up and were presented with completion certificates in front of their parents/carers, peers, school staff and members of the Geraldton community, followed by a social lunch.

P2E is an invaluable program that instils self-confidence, self-worth and social skills in our students with special educational needs through community links and social interaction with people they may not usually have a chance to spend time with. We look forward to another successful P2E in 2024.

The GSHS Stars Foundation End of Year 12 Trip to Broome was a celebration of the girlโ€™s commitment to completing their high school education.

The activities planned during the camp align with the Stars Foundation Pillars of Healthy Lifestyles, Wellbeing, Community Culture & Leadership, Education, Training and Employment.

The Year 12 End of Year Camp is the final event that the year 12 girls participate in as members of the Stars Foundation prior to transitioning into work or study. This camp rewards the Year 12 Stars members for the culmination of 14 yearsโ€™ worth of commitment towards their education and their dedication to the Stars program.

During the camp, the girls engaged with peers, staff and the local Broome community to
โ€ข Develop communication and interpersonal skills
โ€ข Develop leadership and life skills
โ€ข Learn about identity, culture and the history of Broome
โ€ข Develop self-esteem, self-discipline and self-determination

The girls were able to immerse themselves in the culture and history of Broome while visiting this spectacular piece of Australia. We felt it was an important part of our trip to be welcomed to Yawuru Country so we invited the beautiful female elder Dianna Appleby to come and visit us and welcome us to her country, Iโ€™m sure she could tell yarns for days and she was so captivating with her stories that we could have sat with her for a whole day and just listened to her talk, She was very knowledgeable and quite inspiring while being humble and engaging with the girls.

During a private tour of The Broome Pearl Luggers, we learnt so much about the area and some of the unique history of the birth of the famous Broome Pearl Industry and the founding industry of the Pearl Shell Trade that Broome was originally famous for.
We were shocked and saddened to learn of the terrible atrocities that our people were subjected to during these times, especially the cruel conditions that the women (in particular) were forced to endure while diving for the much sort after commodity and the way our people were enslaved to the foreigners who had now taken over their land and waters.

The town has a crazy blend of Asian and indigenous influences like nothing we had ever seen before.

Broome has some spectacular beaches and scenery, and we were blessed to have perfect weather to get out and explore so much of the town and all it had to offer.
For me the highlight was sunset at Cable Beach, it was so magical, and we took some spectacular photos of the girls with the natural backdrop of mother nature.

But for most of the girls their highlight of the camp was our visit to The Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park where they got to hold the cutest little baby Crocodiles and get up close to these massive predatory animals.

It wasnโ€™t all smooth sailing at the Croc Park, there was one rogue lizard that thought it would be safe to run through the group and freak us all out. It was at this time that we discovered that Tamikah has an impressive vertical leap, and she is petrified of anything reptilian.

It put us all a bit on edge and that was kind of the theme for the entire camp as we were often stalked by different animals everywhere we went. Especially in and around the house. None of us will ever feel comfortable around a frog again.

As Stars students these young women will become Stars Alumni and maintain a connection to The Stars Foundation for life. Alumni can call on Stars Mentors and Transition staff and support in times of need and participate in Alumni events. So even though they are no longer in school we will still support them whenever they need us.

Congratulations to ๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ซ๐ง๐ข ๐ƒ๐š๐ง๐ง was selected to represent WA in Clontarfโ€™s inaugural State of Origin AFL Competition in Melbourne from 9-12 November 2023.

Players went through a rigorous selection process where they competed in the Clontarf Cup in Term 1 and two representative games to earn their spot as one of the 22 players.

Whilst in Melbourne the team were hosted by the Collingwood Football Club at Olympic Park. The team competed in 3 games vs Northern Territory, Victoria, and South Australia with only one loss to the N.T.

Calarni said "It was a highlight to play at Collingwood, meet the players and explore the facilityโ€™".

We wish Calarni well in his future endeavours post-graduation in 2023.

The State of Origin will become an annual event and we hope to have more Geraldton Academy boys representing WA next year.

Last Friday students in Years 7-10 who have upheld our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Doing Our Best and have maintained their Good Standing were rewarded on our end of year Good Standing Reward Day.

Students spent the morning at the foreshore competing in Dragon boat racing, enjoying SUP board yoga and wheelchair basketball. They then returned to school for a BBQ lunch and a movie.

Thank you to the external providers, Phys Ed and Learning Support staff as well as the House Coordinators and Student Services support staff who all worked hard to ensure this fantastic day came together!
