🌿🐝 Biodiversity Bonanza! 🦋🌱

On Tuesday, 9 Year 6 students headed to Foresters Forest, a unique urban arboretum, for a day of exploring, discovering and learning about our local environment! 🌳🔎

Students took part in Cultural Education and a Greeting to Spirit of Place, explored the forest’s different plant communities, and became biodiversity detectives as they searched for and documented plants, insects and animals. 🌿🐞🦋 They also became Habitat Heroes, learning about local wildlife and ecosystem connections and getting hands-on with selective weeding to help protect biodiverse green spaces. 💚🌏

And of course, we found maths in nature too! 📏🔢 Students explored maps, estimation, measurement, shape and patterns as they investigated the forest. 🗺️🌿📐

Biodiversity is the variety of plants, animals and other living things in an environment and how they connect with each other. 🌱🐝

What maths can you spot in nature? 🌿🔢
And what can you do at home or in your community to support biodiversity? 🐝🏡💚

Red 5 Maths in the Garden!

Red 5 students have been exploring transformations and symmetry in Maths using the wonderful nature found in our school garden! 🌿🌸🐞 Students used leaves, flowers, sticks, rocks and other natural materials to investigate how objects and patterns can flip, slide and turn. We also learnt the mathematical names for these transformations: reflection, translation and rotation.

Students explored line symmetry and rotational symmetry, discovering how shapes and patterns can be symmetrical in different ways. By creating and investigating patterns with natural materials, students were able to connect mathematical concepts with the world around them. 🍃🌼

🌻 Did you know?
Nature is full of symmetry and balance! We can see it in leaves, flowers and butterfly wings. Maths is all around us!
What transformations can you see? Can you name them?

At Blair Athol North School, the Soccer Specialist Program is about much more than simply playing a game of soccer. Students develop a deeper understanding of the game and its language while becoming critical thinkers and problem solvers. Through the program, players build their vocabulary, understand different roles and responsibilities, and develop the confidence to be brave in their decision-making. They are also encouraged to develop leadership skills and techniques, helping them become confident, responsible and capable players both on and off the field.

Today’s session with Coach Mitch Nicholson started with a theory presentation about match structure and how each player has a responsibility to create calm options to teammates.

Our Red 3 learners have been busy becoming animal experts! 🦁🦜🐢

Students researched a range of fascinating animals before creating colourful and informative posters. They worked hard to identify key facts, organise their information, and present their learning in a clear and engaging way.

Fantastic work, Red 3 and Ms Karun! 🌟

🌿 Kids on Country 🌿

Our Year 5 and 6 students have been learning alongside our Aboriginal Community Education Officers, Sonny and Yolanda, connecting with Country through hands-on cultural experiences. From learning Kaurna language and traditional weaving to ochre painting and playing the yidaki, students are building a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal culture, knowledge and connection to Country.
