✨ Reconciliation Week in 5/6B ✨

Last week, for the beginningof Reconciliation Week, our 5/6B students have been engaging in meaningful discussions and reflections as part of Reconciliation Week. Together, we explored important questions such as:
• What is “Country”?
• Who are the Traditional Custodians of the land we learn on?
• What do “home” and “country” mean to us?

Students shared thoughtful ideas and reflections before beginning a task focused on how they can help and strengthen our GPS community. Their plans included ideas such as school clean-ups, kitchen and garden projects, buddy programs, and building stronger connections with our younger students and the local kindergarten.

We are so proud of the empathy, respect, and community spirit shown by our students as they learn about reconciliation, belonging, and caring for people and place. 💛🖤❤️

In STEM Club we were very excited to try out our brand new cardboard engineering tools!🛠️🧰

We experimented using safety saws🪚 , screwdrivers🪛 and screws 🔩, finding our way around the tools. We can't wait to start working on some construction!

On the 8th of May, as part of International Compost Awareness Week students in Grade 3 and 4 had the opportunity to engage in a Cardinia Waste incursion hosted by The Gould League focused around recycling, food waste and plastic pollution.♻️🌍

The students learnt about what plastic is, and how it and other pollutants get into our oceans. They also learnt about the world of microorganisms and worms and how beneficial they are to our environment.🌊🪱

It was a lot of fun!🌟

This week, students in Prep A have been reading the wonderful story Norton and the Bear.🐻

This engaging text provided a great opportunity for students to explore character feelings through the illustrations and story events.

During guided discussions, students noticed that sometimes Norton’s mouth is covered, making it tricky to tell whether he is smiling or how he might be feeling. In comparison, Bear’s facial expressions were much easier to identify.

Students discussed the different clues we can use to help understand how a character is feeling, such as body language, actions and what is happening in the story. They did a fantastic job justifying their thinking using visual cues from the illustrations and then used a word bank to write about how each character was feeling throughout the story.

We are very proud of the thoughtful discussions and excellent learning that took place!

Prep A enjoyed a very special visit from our school wellbeing dog, Harmony, and her carer, Louise. 🐶💛

Students loved having the opportunity to pat and cuddle Harmony, ask Louise questions and share stories about their own pets. We also learnt some interesting facts about dogs, including that dogs sniff to learn about people, places and other animals because they cannot ask questions like humans do! Students also discovered that a wagging tail often means a dog is feeling happy and trusting.
As part of the visit, we discussed ways to stay safe around dogs. Students learnt that if they ever feel scared or are being chased by a dog, they can “stand like a tree” or curl up and protect themselves “like a turtle.”
Thank you to Louise and Harmony for such a calm, engaging and informative visit.
