Gembrook Senior Citizens Reading Program 📚

Friday, 7th November, we commenced our new shared Reading Program at Gembrook Pre-School with the Gembrook Senior Citizens. They were pleased to see all the books purchased with the funds they kindly donated to our kindergarten.

Rhonda, Sam, Marie and Sandra from the Senior Citizens spent 1 1/2 hours reading with the children, sharing insights into the text and illustrations, and enjoying conversation.

It was really wonderful to see the children connecting with members of their local community. On Monday, 17th November, the reading program will continue with another group of Senior Citizens visiting Wattle Group.

This has been a valuable addition to our educational program this year and we are very grateful to the Senior Citizens for making this commitment☺️

“Bring A Bloke to Bush Kinder” was an opportunity for our Wattle and Banksia Group children to invite a special male role model to a twilight activity night at Gilwell Park. The evening was very well attended with all our guests joining in with a sausage sizzle, rock climbing and a range of physical activities at the adventure course. Thanks to everyone that came along and helped make this event a great success 🌟

On Wednesday, 29th October, we walked to JAC Russell Park with the second-year children to join in with a sausage sizzle provided by the Gembrook Senior Citizens. We had a warm, sunny afternoon to enjoy the walk along the Main Street to the park. We were met at the park by Senior Citizens Committee President, Darrell, and a large number of the Senior Citizens group.

The children gathered on a ground mat and took turns collecting a sausage in bread and a drink from the ladies on the barbecue. The children were patient waiting for their turn and all said "Thank You" when they received their sausage in bread. One of the members had brought along her blue tooth speaker and played some favourite songs from Disney movies for the children while they ate.

After the delicious sausages, the children invited the Senior Citizens to join in with some songs and dances ~ The "Tooty Ta" (which they thought was lots of fun), "Mr Clicketty Cane", and "This Is My Singing Voice". After the singing and dancing the children were surprised with lemonade icy poles given out by the Senior Citizens as well.

We gave the Seniors a round of applause for all their efforts and thanked them sincerely for their generosity providing such a lovely experience for our kindergarten children.

We presented Darrell with a Certificate of Appreciation from Gembrook Pre-School for the Senior Citizens’ donation of funds towards purchasing books for our kindergarten. We will have the books available for reading when the Senior Citizens commence their reading sessions with Wattle and Banksia Groups in November 📚

Through experiences such as this the children are connecting with their community and strengthening their sense of belonging. At a young age they are already gaining an understanding about the value of being active local citizens. Thank you to the Seniors for their commitment to growing this relationship💚

Friday, 24th October, Gembrook Pre-School hosted a Paint and Sip evening at the local Community Centre. Our fundraising and events team set the scene with beautiful floral displays and an amazing array of sweet and savoury platters and delicious mocktails. The painting experience brought together members of our kindergarten and local community, while also raising funds for our service. A big shout-out to Tegan Bell for her wonderful painting inspiration and instruction for this event.
Thanks so much to all who supported the evening ~ some very creative and talented artists emerged throughout the night 🎨 🖼️ 🍋

Thank You to Our Amazing Educators!

On Wednesday the 3rd of September, we celebrated Early Childhood Educators' Day at Gembrook Preschool. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together to recognise the passion, care and dedication our educators bring to work each day.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank our incredible team for the many ways they support our Preschool children - non only by supporting children’s learning and wellbeing but also through the extra time and effort they give to out-of-hours events and activities that help enrich our Preschool community. Your commitment does not go unnoticed and is deeply appreciated.

Today, kindergarten teachers and educators across Victoria have commenced industrial action after more than 15 months of negotiations. We would also like to acknowledge their efforts and stand in solidarity with them as they continue to advocate for fair pay and improved working conditions.

To all educators - thank you. The impact you have on the lives of the children and families is immeasurable and we are so grateful for everything you do.

Wednesday, 3rd September, B&G Fire and Cultural Awareness provided an interactive and engaging learning experience for the second year children at Gembrook Pre-School. Through a variety of nature based activities, Brandon and Greg supported the children’s learning about Aboriginal culture and connection to Country.

The children had the opportunity to heat Banksia pods over an open fire to release the seeds from within their follicles. They planted the resulting seeds in garden tubes to be maintained at kindergarten. They painted gum leaves, using bracken fern stems, reflecting the colours of water, sand and sun, and later, hung their leaf on a mounted tree branch. Finally, each child was invited to place an Aboriginal symbol onto a hessian landscape mat and Greg narrated a story based on the positioning of each symbol. These are only a few examples of the wonderful learning experiences provided by B&G Fire and Cultural Awareness throughout the afternoon. Thanks Brandon and Greg for bringing Aboriginal culture to life for our young learners🍃

A massive THANK YOU to Wayne VerHees and his business “Gemtrim Motor Trimming” for creating and installing our fantastic new sandpit cover at Gembrook Pre-School. The cover was carefully made to fit the surrounds of our natural-look sandpit, surrounded by rocks. Wayne also made a set of sandbags with handles to weight down the edges of the cover in all weather conditions.
Wayne’s grandson currently attends Gembrook Pre-School and was very proud to share the sandpit cover with his kindergarten friends this week and demonstrate how it is opened and closed. We are incredibly grateful to Wayne, Chloe VerHees and Liam Henzen for generously donating all labour and materials to complete this project. THANK YOU 💚💚💚

Wednesday, 13th August, our second year children visited the Gembrook Senior Citizens at their lunchtime gathering at the Community Centre. The children shared their Acknowledgement of Country, sang The Three Bears Rap, and invited the Senior Citizens to join in the Hokey Pokey which we sang in English, and also in Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung language.
After all the singing and dancing, the children shared scones with jam and cream which had been prepared earlier in the day at kindergarten.
It was a wonderful experience for the children to connect with senior members of the Gembrook community in such a positive way. Over the coming weeks we have a number of Senior Citizens coming to read stories with the children at our kindergarten. We look forward to continuing to build a strong relationship between our organisations💚💚
