This is what a melody looks like when the temperature is just right.

On the morning of March 17, 2019, a red-winged blackbird perched on a bare branch at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, Virginia, and began to sing. The air was cold. The sun had just risen over the treeline and was backlighting everything in front of it. And as the bird opened its beak and pushed out its territorial call with everything it had, something happened that most people will never see in their lifetime.

The song became visible.

This is not a rare physical phenomenon. It is the same thing that happens when a person breathes out on a cold day and sees their breath cloud in front of them. But in birds, singing with the full force of their territorial instinct on a frigid spring morning, the effect produces something that looks less like breath and more like music given a body.

The red-winged blackbird is one of North America's most common birds. Its call, a sharp, liquid trill that sounds like a rusted gate swinging open, fills marshes, roadsides, and wetlands across the continent every spring. Males sing to defend territory and attract mates, belting out their call repeatedly for hours at a time from exposed perches, often before the sun has fully risen.

It is a song most people have heard without ever thinking about what it looks like. On a cold enough morning, with the sun in the right position, it looks like this.
