Thank you to Brendon Smart for spending the day with our final year Agriculture students on Monday as part of their Farm Business Strategy studies.

Brendon and his wife Robyn founded the Smart Group, a family farming operation run along corporate lines. Its board includes five external directors, including the chairman, alongside family representation.

Based at Akeringa, south of Keith, with a satellite operation in the Barossa Valley, the Smart family oversees 6,500 hectares supporting wool, lamb, cattle, cropping, export fodder and irrigation enterprises.

Brendon’s visit gave students valuable insights into the strategy and governance behind a diverse family farming business. We greatly appreciate his time and willingness to share his knowledge and experience.

Artificial Intelligence is already changing the way agricultural businesses operate, but where are the practical opportunities for producers and agribusinesses today?

Marcus Oldham College Council member and Chair of the Centre for Professional Development Committee, Peter O'Loughlin, shares why this is an important conversation for Australian agriculture.

It was great to welcome Marcus Oldham graduate Simone Dax (AG07), Senior Commodity Trader, Pulses at Louis Dreyfus Company, back to the College earlier this week to speak with our final year students.

Simone shared insights into her career journey, from starting out as a coordinator in Leeton, NSW, after graduating from Marcus Oldham to her current role as a Senior Commodity Trader. She also provided a fascinating look at the global pulses market and the opportunities and challenges involved in international commodity trading.

Our first year Agriculture students were fortunate to welcome Associate Professor Richard Fry, Co founder and Director of Speedbreed, to Marcus Oldham last week for two sessions exploring reproductive technologies in livestock production systems.

Across the sessions, Richard took students through artificial insemination (AI), multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET), and in vitro fertilisation (IVF), and their application within modern livestock production.

Our final year Agriculture students welcomed John Francis from .au to Marcus Oldham today for a session exploring profitability drivers and machinery decisions within farming systems.

Thank you to John for taking the time to work with our students and share his knowledge and industry experience. We’re also glad to hear the Marcus gardens continued to received the tick of approval!

Our final year Agriculture students welcomed Bill Winter to Marcus Oldham today for a session on the importance of communication in successful succession planning.

Bill shared his extensive experience working with farming families, exploring why open and effective communication is so important when navigating succession and the transition of family businesses from one generation to the next.

As our final year students move closer to graduation, sessions like this form an important part of preparing them for life beyond Marcus and some of the conversations and challenges they may encounter throughout their careers in agriculture.

That preparation will continue throughout the final trimester and culminate in our Life After Marcus session in the days leading up to graduation.

Thank you to Craig Altmann and Brendan Torpy from AGF Seeds for hosting our first year Agriculture students recently.

The visit gave students the opportunity to discuss feedbase options for southern production systems before heading into the field at AGF Seeds’ Creswick research and development site.

It was great to welcome our first and final year Agriculture students back to Marcus Oldham today as they began the final trimester of the year.

While our Agriculture students have returned to campus, our Agribusiness students are continuing their industry placements around Australia and will be back with us in a few weeks' time.

The final trimester is always a busy and rewarding time of the year, with plenty of sporting, social and College events alongside the academic program. For our final year students, the journey to Graduation is now well and truly underway, and December will arrive before they know it.

We look forward to another memorable trimester as students make the most of everything that lies ahead.
