How I create value around the heel position isn't limited to one approach, but this is a good place to start.

It helps define where "heel" is and gives the dog an idea of how to step into that position.

Aim to reward the dog when they find the exact position.

A few repetitions every day can make finding heel fun for your dog while introducing the concept of moving together, side by side.

If you have a dog that barks and lunges at other dogs, you understand what a big deal this is.

Training and education can improve your handling skills and your dog's ability to cope with other dogs in close proximity.

Do yourself a favour: find a reputable local trainer with experience working with reactive dogs. Use kind, consistent methods and build towards positive social exposure opportunities like this one.

This is literally how I prevent Pippin from barking. 😂

Not by telling him to stop barking.

Sit to stand. Heel. Engagement. Listening. Thinking. Following direction.

Pippin came to me as a young adult rescue, highly reactive and overstimulated. We worked through a lot of exposure and remedial socialisation early on, but he still likes to bark at anyone unexpectedly walking by, as though he needs to announce their arrival! 😂

Training more complex and mentally demanding obedience skills has helped his overactive brain tremendously.

It's not just about teaching him what I want him to do. It's giving him something constructive to think about, and an appropriate outlet for all that brainpower.

Sometimes preventing unwanted behaviour isn't about addressing the behaviour itself.

It's about making sure the dog has something better to do with their brain in the first place.

This is your reminder that your dog needs to be carefully introduced to novel environments.

🔹Use a leash
🔹Start at distance
🔹Be patient

Aim to create engagement with you, despite the distraction. Reinforce good behaviour heavily and finish on a good note.
