Alumni Yolanda Esteban (Class of 1996) has recently spoken with the STRIVE classes at Year 7, 8 and 9 levels. Yolanda is Associate Head of School, Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment/ School of Architecture and Built Environment at Deakin University in Geelong. Her degrees include a Doctor of Philosophy, Bachelor of Architecture (Honours), Bachelor of Building (Honours) and a Graduate Certificate of Higher Education.
With her industry experience in the areas of urban design and strategic planning and formal training in Architecture and Construction Management, Yolanda has worked on several key projects across Victoria in both regional and metropolitan contexts.
Yolanda’s research has focused on the changing profile of urban spaces, using population data and trends to design future physical spaces (like buildings and neighbourhoods) and how to turn big urban design ideas into real, enforceable planning policies.
The STRIVE classes are all completing research and developing presentations with increasing complexity as the students progress through the year levels. With her experience, Yolanda has been a perfect alum to speak with these classes. She detailed her pathway since leaving NGSC and presented the research she is currently undertaking - to see whether Fisherman's Gully was connected to Cowies Creek in the past.
Yolanda outlined various sources for research (she loves maps and photographs) and gave tips on how to verify research.
She is looking forward to the Expo in term 4, which showcases the students' work to parents, friends and staff.
Thanks, Yolanda, for giving up your time to speak with all three classes!

Alumni Insights: Inspiring the Next Generation of Community Leaders

Our VCE Vocational Major students recently had the pleasure of welcoming back two North Geelong Secondary College alumni, Kray Real (Class of 2011) and Erfan Rahimy (Class of 2018), to share their powerful experiences with community volunteering.

Kray discussed his work with engineering initiatives focused on improving fresh water access for communities, while Erfan reflected on his leadership within the Afghan community and his role with the Victorian Youth Government, where he advocated for youth mental health reform in multicultural communities.

Their stories provided our students with practical, firsthand knowledge on how to meaningfully connect and engage with target organisations — directly supporting their Unit 4 Personal Development Skills and Literacy outcomes. We extend a huge thank you to Kray and Erfan for giving up their time to mentor our current cohort!

Are you an NGSC graduate? We would love to connect with you! Join our growing alumni network by emailing us at [email protected] or sending us a direct message on Facebook.

Alumni Return for Year 10 Careers Week

Six North Geelong Secondary College alumni returned to campus to share their post-school journeys and insights as part of Year 10 Careers Week.

A big thank you to our returning alumni:

David Posterino (Class of 2003)

Craig Simpson (Class of 1985)

Jorjah Brown (Class of 2022)

Richard Duerden (Class of 1987)

Miles Nicole Agras (Class of 2022)

Kai Purton (Class of 2022)

Joined on the panel by Kat (Deakin University) as well as Ebony and Jack (Victorian Group Training), our guest speakers answered questions about their varied career pathways since leaving NGSC.

During the following expo-style session, Year 10 students explored a wide range of industries—including career firefighting, marketing, money management, music, nursing, and Early Childhood Education. The diverse perspectives offered invaluable guidance for students preparing to select their upcoming VCE subjects.

It was fantastic to see such a broad representation of graduating years and industries back on campus!
