Established in 1977, with funding from the Federal Government to build the premises, this not-for-profit children’s service has provided quality care and early years education to the children and families of Gateshead and the surrounding communities for 40 years. Formerly known as Daniel’s Den Preschool, in 2001 the service underwent a name change to become Felton Street Early Learning Preschool.

With this new name the preschool broadened the educational programmes on offer, to be inclusive of children between two and six years old. Today, Felton Street Early Learning Preschool continues to provide quality early years education to children and families from all over Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. Felton Street Early Learning Preschool is a not for profit children’s service. Owned and operated by the community, the preschool’s voluntary management committee is elected yearly and is made up of parents and other interested community-minded persons. The preschool enrols 39 children per day, and children are grouped by age as either 3-5 year olds (the Butterfly Room) or 4-5 year olds (the Busy Bee Room). The preschool operates on extended hours from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and is open Monday to Friday during normal school terms. Licensed to operate by the NSW Department of Education and Communities, the preschool complies with Education and Care Services National Legislation 2010 and the Education and Care Services National Regulations 2011 and all other legislative and regulatory instruments. With a reputation for being inclusive of all children, the preschool works in partnership with families to ensure the best outcomes for all children enrolled. Our programming encompasses the Early Years Learning Framework and is an emergent curriculum. Believing strongly in the importance of early years education, the preschool employs qualified and experienced Early Childhood educators to work with the children enrolled. As well as supporting the on-going training of future professionals for employment in the wider community. Felton Street Early Learning Preschool strives to be a voice in the community about children’s growth, development and education. Our organisation has strong links with other community organisations and groups including the NSW Department of Education and Communities, the NSW Department of Families and Community Services, Catholic Education, church groups, Brighter Futures, Hunter New England Area Health Services, Aspect, Firstchance and other specialist health professionals and organisations.

Our outdoor kitchen is coming to life in the most inspiring way

By incorporating recycled metal objects, we’ve created a rich, open-ended space that invites children to explore, experiment, and imagine. These unique materials have not only expanded the possibilities for play, but also sparked deeper engagement and curiosity.

Every day, we see opportunities for collaboration, communication, creativity, and problem-solving unfold naturally as children work together, share ideas, and bring their imaginative recipes to life.

Sustainable, creative, and full of wonder, this is play.

Final Day at Project Felton Street

Our incredible team of builders from Intelligent Construction Solutions have made our dream of extending and renovating our preschool come true.

There have been very early starts and very late finishes consistently across the project. Lots of problem solving, teamwork, and a whole lot of pride poured into every detail.

Phil, Sam and Andrew have worked tirelessly over nine weeks, often under immense pressure, to get the job done. They have been supported by Cameron, whose work on site has been invaluable, and Petra, their business manager, who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the team every step of the way.

To our incredible builders and trades, thank you. Your hard work, dedication and commitment to bringing this project to life has not gone unnoticed.

Now we get to step back and admire what has been created. A building that will serve, support and stand strong for years to come.

This week our painting crew Michelle, Kirsty, Freya, Robyn and Ruth joined the team, along with Mrs Peachey from St Paul’s, who generously gave her time to help us paint.

Meanwhile in the background, Maddie, Gemma, Brit, Alana, Jas, Aysha and Indi have been preparing rooms and cleaning, ready for everyone to return.

We are so excited for everyone to see the progress so far. There is still more painting, flooring and finishing touches to come!

Today we celebrate what’s been built and the people who made it possible.

Please join us in the comments to show them the appreciation they truly deserve.

Another huge week at Project Felton Street 🏗️

The roof is officially on and complete! Of course when you work on a roof it has to rain ☔️ so we had a little hiccup early in the week.

The scaffold has come down and the Great Wall of Gateshead has been unveiled and it looks fabulous.

Things are really taking shape: accessibility handrails are being installed, gyprock is up on the walls, and electrical fit-off has begun. There’s still plenty to do as we head into the finishing touches, but the progress is exciting.

A massive shout-out to our incredible builders who’ve been putting in 15-hour days, working through the heat to get the roof finished. Absolute legends.

We were very privileged to get an invite up to the roof to see the progress and the view from above!

Can’t wait to see what next week brings 👀

So much progress in just a week!

The path and ramp are complete, the roof is going on the windows are finished - and we’ve also had our electrical rough-in and insulation installed.

There’s still plenty of change to come, with only 2 weeks to go! 🚧✨

Huge milestone reached today 🎉

The wall (which we are affectionally calling The Great Wall of Gateshead is now fully core-filled to the top with concrete, and the front door has been replaced — something we’re all very excited about!

The new wider footpath is taking shape, and our amazing builders are putting in huge days to bring this project together. So grateful for this hardworking team 💪✨
