CBC Fremantle Alumni

It is often said that CBC Fremantle has a unique Principal – and this was never more true than during English and Languages Week in 2022 when students were treated to a variety of events and activities; Gelato and pizza were on offer, and Principal Domenic Burgio took students on a fun Vespa ride around the Cloisters to replicate the Italian experience.

2022 was quite the rollercoaster year. COVID-19 had knocked the school for six and every opportunity was made to find fun new ways to engage with learning.

Were you one of those lucky students?

Surfing at CBC continues to thrive and the boys recognise the privilege and blessing of being able to start a day with the majesty of our ocean playground. Their enthusiasm translates to a fantastic effort every time they enter the water. No matter the weather, spirits are always high as the boys’ charge into waves, braving the chill and sharing their encouragement and tips.

1999 saw CBC venture into the Interschool surfing arena for the very first time. The team performed well in the last heat with tied scores but lost to Carine Senior High School on a count back. Not a bad result considering they made it to the third round.

As we continue to celebrate 125 years of CBC Fremantle, another piece of our College story is being carefully preserved for future generations.

The Brothers' House is a big part of the CBC Fremantle story, it is exciting to see the restoration and improvement works nearing completion. A treasured part of our past, ready for its next chapter.

Playing music together has the ability to create powerful bonds of friendship, and music has long been a special feature of the CBC Arts Program. However, Concert Band Tours in the 80s were just a little different to those today.

In 1985, during the September school break, 36 musicians and four staff travelled to Adelaide by bus to stay at the Marist Brothers Sacred Heart College in Somerton Park. ‘Musitour’ performances were made at the Royal Show, in the Rundle Street Mall in the City Centre, at homes for the aged, and in other local areas. The students were widely praised for their performances.

By 1993, much had changed at CBC and the highlight of the music year was CBC’s first International Music Tour to Singapore, made possible by the fundraising efforts of CBC families and a substantial grant from the Public Endowment Trust. The Jazz Orchestra led by Mr Uwe Stengel, showcased their skills in the courtyard of the famous Raffles Hotel, on Sentosa Island, for the Public Utilities Board and at St Patrick's School. Serious shopping expeditions were undertaken with Walkmans, Doc Martens, CDs and clothes among the treasures carried home.

Following a nine-year break, the music tour returned to Singapore in 2009 with the Jazz Orchestra performing at several tourist venues as well as providing entertainment at a Jazz Swing Club called 'Jitterbugs' where the boys' professionalism delighted the dancers. It was quite a different experience to have people dancing to their music and they all enjoyed the event.

Fast forward to 2018 and another ‘experience of a lifetime’ tour for the CBC musicians with nine jam-packed days of performances and cultural immersion. Performing for tourists on Sentosa Island in front of the Merlion statue was again a highlight, with of course, plenty of time allowed for some retail therapy!

A fast-paced race around the inside path of the College Cloisters continues to be a highlight of the annual House Week with the overall winner being crowned the King of the Cloisters and points for each House adding towards their Wedd Cup Score.
Not for the faint-hearted, each group of runners gives their all with knee pads and helmets firmly affixed, cheered on loudly by peers and staff.

The Wedd Cup is an inter-House year-long competition that encourages House spirit and comradeship with points awarded in the areas of Service, Academic, Arts, Sport and House Week activities.

George Ayres

The Funeral Mass for Mr George Ayres of Treeby will be celebrated in St Mary Star of the Sea Church, 2 McNeil Street, Peppermint Grove commencing at 2.00pm FRIDAY (17.07.2026).

Following the Mass the cortege will meet at main entrance of KARRAKATTA Cemetery, on Railway Road, Karrakatta at 3.30pm for a Burial Service.

Vigil Prayers and Rosary will be recited in Bowra & O'Dea's Chapel, 312 South Street, Hilton at 3.30pm on THURSDAY (16.07.2026).

George Ayres
Class of 1950

It is with great sadness that we advise the passing of our dear friend and colleague George Ayres on Friday 3 July 2026.

George was a stalwart champion of CBC Fremantle and the Old Boys’ Association throughout its history and his experience was much appreciated.

An Old Boys' Committee member for many years, and President of the Committee from 2002 to early 2017, his unwavering commitment, integrity, and leadership have left a lasting impact on the old boys of CBC and his legacy has set a high standard which will continue to inspire future committees.

The College records include the very many initiatives he was a part of, including reunions, fundraising, special events and support, and we are all very appreciative of the time and effort he gave to keep the spirit of unity and tradition of the old boys of CBC Fremantle alive. His dedication to keeping these connections has made a very real difference in strengthening our alumni community of today.

George firmly believed that we each carry a part of CBC Fremantle within us, a testament to the formative years spent learning, growing and forging lifelong friendships, and in following in his footsteps, we look forward to keeping up the traditions of excellence, camaraderie, and support for generations to come.

Our deepest sympathy to George's wife Patricia, and children, Lee Anne, Sandra, Noeleen, and Marcus on their sad loss.

What does the CBC Old Boys tie symbolise?

Since their origins in military regiments, and throughout the 19th Century, ties have been seen as a symbol of power and respect.

The CBC Old Boys tie, to be worn at Graduation, and quite different to the College tie, was introduced in 2007.

The tie represents a lifelong connection, a sense of pride, of belonging and tradition.

A well-tied knot (like a Windsor) signals leadership, competence, and attention to detail and style. The wearing of a tie is a finishing touch that can make the wearer feel polished and in command. It generates an aura of respectability.

While ties may longer be a requirement in many workplaces, and fashions will come and go, the CBC alumni tie remains a timeless statement of a unique and special membership.
