CBC Fremantle is a school of many traditions.

One of the most heart-warming is the Year 12 Guard of Honour to welcome the incoming Year 7s to the College Assembly on their first day of high school. Watching the hesitant, nervous smiles, and the straightening of small shoulders as they walk through the corridor of applause is priceless.

The Year 12s spend the first day mentoring and helping the Year 7s adjust to their new surroundings, much as a big brother would.

Another is in Term 3, when these same Year 7s, much more confident now, form their own Guard of Honour for the beaming Year 12s, applauding them with enthusiastic appreciation as they exit their final College Assembly on the last day of the term.

This once-in-a lifetime, end of an era exit, to the haunting sounds of Going Home Local Hero by Dire Straits, leaves barely a dry-eye amongst the watching parents, and often the students and staff too.

On Saturday, following our 125-Year Celebration, we held our annual All-Ages Reunion and Awards. It was one of the most well-attended and vibrant alumni gatherings in recent memory, bringing together Old Boys and Alumni from across the decades to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate their shared connection to CBC Fremantle.

The afternoon was made even more special as we recognised members of our community through the presentation of the Outstanding Service Awards and Distinguished Alumni Awards, honouring individuals whose lives, careers, leadership, and service reflect the enduring values of CBC Fremantle and the vision of Edmund Rice.

Whether through contributions to education, medicine, community service, advocacy, leadership, creativity, or supporting those most in need, these recipients have made a meaningful impact on the lives of others and helped create a better community for all.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the reunion such a memorable occasion. It was a wonderful reminder that while years may pass, the bonds formed at CBC Fremantle remain strong.

Once a CBC Gentleman, always part of the CBC family.

With the end of football season looming, and a possible win in sight for The Fremantle Dockers, nostalgic thoughts of our own successes may come to mind.

In 2007 and 2008, the CBC 1st XVIII Football Teams took out the Honours for their respective divisions in the Belt-Up Schoolboys Cup, the WA secondary school football competition sponsored by the Insurance Commission of WA's 'Belt-Up' road safety campaign.

In 2008, they were the team to beat due to their undefeated run the previous year.

Grand Final Day saw a rematch of the 2007 Grand Final against the very physical Woodvale SHS team. The game got off to a flying start with the midfield looking unstoppable, the backs impenetrable, and the forwards untouchable. In the second half, Woodvale mounted a strong came back to level up mid-way through the last quarter, but with some desperate and mighty efforts, CBC held on and brought it home by a point in a thriller finish.

In 2009, the 1st XVIII had the chance to prove themselves in the top grade against some quality opposition. Fielding a very young side with a record nine Year l0s and one Year 9 student, which was almost unheard of at that level back then, the boys made it to the preliminary finals ahead of power houses Sacred Heart and Clontarf and falling just short of a grand final appearance.

Who remembers the highs and the lows of Grand Final season? Fingers crossed for a Dockers high!

Today, we welcomed a wonderful gathering of Old Boys and Alumni, along with their guests and former staff to the College for our annual Over 60s Morning Tea, generously sponsored by John Hughes (Class of 1952).

With alumni spanning more than three decades, the morning was filled with shared stories and fond memories as guests reconnected with old classmates and returned to the place that played such an important role in their lives.

It was particularly heartening to see our Year 11 students assisting throughout the morning, serving refreshments and connecting with those whose experiences and stories form an important part of the College's rich history.

Guests were welcomed by Alumni Committee President Carmelo Zagami (Class of 1987), while Director of Finance and Operations Mark Bianchini provided an update on the College's ongoing development and future plans.

Events such as these are an important reminder that being part of CBC Fremantle extends far beyond a student's time at the College, with friendships, memories, and connections continuing across generations.

Thank you to all who attended and helped make the morning such a special occasion.

CBC Fremantle runs an active student Chess program featuring regular co-curricular lunch clubs, internal library and term tournaments across year levels.
Chess is sometimes said to be a metaphor for life!

The game of Chess sharpens the mind, builds memory and recall skills, and enhances tactical thinking and strategy. Every choice has consequences, actions are permanent, and success requires planning ahead.

Napoleon Bonaparte, famous for his brilliant military campaigns, was known to be an avid chess player. Magnus Carlsen, widely considered the best player of the modern era, just wanted to beat his big sister, and Bobby Fischer, an American genius known for his 1972 World Championship win against Russian Boris Spassky, attracted more worldwide interest in chess championships than any other player before, or since.

For most of us, it's probably just a pleasant way to enjoy a quiet afternoon, but who knows, perhaps the next world chess champion started at school just like these students in 1996, 1999, 2005 and 2019.
