Today i have a moorish recipe perfect for our cold winter weather! This is a traditional French toasted sandwich and absolutely delicious. You can make this as simple as you like or elevate it to the next level!
Croque Monsieur 🥪🧀
Crisp on the outside, rich and cheesy on the inside, it's perfect for lunch, dinner or a cosy weekend brunch to make with our little learners!
Serves: 4
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
For the béchamel:
• 30 g butter
• 30 g plain flour
• 375 ml full cream milk
• ½ tsp Dijon mustard
• Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (optional)
• Salt and cracked black pepper, to taste
For the sandwiches:
● 8 slices thick white sourdough or brioche bread
● 30 g softened butter
● 2 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
● 8 slices quality leg ham
● 200 g Gruyère cheese, grated (or Swiss cheese if preferred)
● 30 g Parmesan cheese, finely grated
Method:
1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced).
2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about a minute until smooth. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
3. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. Stir in the Dijon mustard, nutmeg, salt and pepper.
4. Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side if using.
5. Place four slices onto a baking tray, buttered side down. Top each with two slices of ham, a generous handful of Gruyère and a spoonful of béchamel.
6. Finish with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side facing up.
7. Spread the remaining béchamel over the tops of each sandwich, making sure to reach the edges.
8.Sprinkle generously with the remaining Gruyère and the Parmesan.
9. Bake for 15 minutes, then switch the oven to grill for 2–4 minutes, until the cheese is bubbling, deeply golden and irresistibly crisp.
10. Serve immediately with a crisp cucumber, cornichons or salsa
Chef Tip: For an extra indulgent version, top the finished sandwich with a fried egg to create a Croque Madame 😉
