Frankston Communities for Children believe in the power of children’s voices being heard.
This year, we wanted to capture children’s voices in a different format; a book. We created five Frankston Superheroes based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and from our many years of listening to what is important to the children of Frankston.
The superheroes developed were:
Eco Eli, environment superhero – helps kids by keeping their world clean and the animals safe. He can teach you how to care for the environment, the bay, the animals and how to be a responsible environment hero.
Mighty Munch, healthy superhero – helps kids by keeping them feeling healthy and strong. He can teach you how to make healthy food choices and move your body to feel good, so you can be a healthy hero.
Bright Bella, learning superhero – helps kids by keeping them interested in learning and staying safe online. She can teach you how to solve problems, be confident in trying new things and use screens in a healthy way, so you can be a learning hero.
Heartina Hug, feelings superhero – helps kids by being a good listener, bringing kindness and making sure they feel like they are loved and important. She can teach you that big feelings are ok, to respect others and to be kind, so you can be an accepting superhero.
Guardian George, safety superhero – helps kids by supporting them to feel safe, have a home to go to and keep the community protected. He can teach you how to ask a trusted adult for help, have safe spaces and feel you can stand up for yourself and others, so you can be a safety hero.
We workshopped the superheroes with children from schools within the Frankston local government area, to hear what they thought were the qualities and important characteristics of each superhero. We used their words, locations, ideas and artwork to form the story of the book.
To provide an opportunity for as many children as possible to have their say on the question, “Which superhero do you think Frankston needs the most?” 583 children were able to cast their vote, with the winning superhero being announced at the book launch.

Some very important messages for all kids. Have the chat with your child and always remind them, their bodies belong to them, nobody touches their body without their permission.

What's something small that makes you feel joy? It could be seeing a rainbow, doing something creative or singing along to your favourite song.
Those tiny reminders that good stuff exists are called "glimmers". They're a great tool to keep in mind for the tough days ✨
