🍽️ VET Cookery and Hospitality in Action

Our VET Cookery and VET Hospitality students recently worked together to deliver a tapas-style share-plate service.

The event allowed students from both programs to put their practical learning into action while completing important outcomes for their units of competency.

Once again, the food and service were amazing, a wonderful reflection of the skills, effort and professionalism our students continue to demonstrate through Monterey’s VET programs.

🔬 Celebrating Science Week at Monterey 🧪

National Science Week is an annual celebration of science and technology that encourages students to explore, investigate and engage with the world around them. Here is a snapshot of how students across Monterey took part:

❤️ Year 8 students explored the structure and function of the heart through a heart dissection. Students identified its different parts and investigated how they work together to circulate blood around the body.

⚗️ Year 9 students investigated different types of chemical reactions while developing their skills in accurately recording experimental observations and data.

🔥 Year 10 Medical and Chemical Science students used flame tests to explore how elements in the periodic table can be identified by the colours they produce when heated.

🧬 Year 11 VCE Biology students visited the Gene Technology Access Centre in Melbourne to learn how prenatal and predictive genetic testing works, when these tests are used and why they are important.

Across the different year levels, Science Week highlighted our Monterey students’ curiosity, collaboration and engagement in hands-on learning. These activities provided meaningful ways for students to investigate scientific concepts and understand how science connects to the world around them.

🌺 VICTORIAN STATE SCHOOL SPECTACULAR 🌺

What an incredible weekend for Monterey students Alexis, Ceena and Xiao, who performed with Pese Mai at John Cain Arena!

After rehearsing throughout the year, the girls took to the stage for two packed shows on Saturday. They performed with confidence and professionalism, making the most of this unforgettable experience.

Their preparation involved learning an entire song in Samoan, as well as traditional dance and vocal harmonies. Ceena and Xiao were also each selected to perform a solo traditional vocal call on stage, an incredible achievement.

For Year 12 students Alexis and Ceena, this was their final year performing with Pese Mai. They were also acknowledged by Sala & Co with an honorary thank you, making the occasion even more meaningful.

Throughout the year, all three students arrived at rehearsals organised and on time, maintained a positive attitude and adapted whenever needed. Their hard work and commitment allowed them to represent Monterey proudly on such a significant stage.

A special thank you to Alana, who rehearsed with, guided and supported the girls throughout the year.

Congratulations, Alexis, Ceena and Xiao. We are incredibly proud of everything you achieved! 💙

🤖 R.E.M.I.X. Digi Tech! 💻

Our students had the exciting opportunity to visit and connect with Frankston Tech School, taking part in a hands-on STEM program exploring coding and robotics with micro and LEGO® SPIKE.

Working in the Tech School’s specialist environment allowed students to build on their Digital Technologies learning at Monterey. As they tackled a range of practical challenges, they used creativity, problem-solving and teamwork to test ideas and bring their designs to life.

📊 2026 ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY | HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS

We’re proud to begin sharing some of the positive results from our 2026 Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS).

AtoSS gives students the opportunity to share their views about learning, engagement, relationships, wellbeing and belonging at school. Their feedback helps us recognise what is working well and where we can continue to improve.

🌟 Our 2026 results show 90% positive endorsement for High Expectations for Success across Years 7–12.

This is an increase from 87% in 2025 and is well above the 2026 state result of 70%.

Our students told us that:

• 98% feel their teachers expect them to do their best
• 94% feel teachers encourage all students to do their best
• 92% believe their teachers think they can succeed at school

At Monterey, we set high expectations for every student and support those expectations through strong relationships, consistent encouragement and a genuine belief in what our young people can achieve. These results reflect the work happening across our school each day to help students build confidence, recognise their potential and continue progressing in their learning.

Over the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing more of what our students told us through the 2026 AtoSS.

🎽Participation is growing,and so are our results!

On Thursday, Monterey was proudly represented at the NP District Athletics Carnival by our largest team in recent history. In fact, we needed a 57-seat bus to get everyone there,a fantastic reflection of the growing number of students choosing to participate and compete for our school.

That growth was matched by some outstanding results, with six students progressing to the regional level across nine events.

For the first time in four years, Monterey also fielded teams in the 4x100m relays, with students competing in the 13 Boys, 13 Girls, 14 Boys, 15 Girls and 15 Boys events.
🏆Our 13 Boys placed third, while our 15 Boys achieved an impressive second place.

These results reflect the continued growth of athletics at Monterey and our commitment to supporting students to get involved, challenge themselves and compete at higher levels.

We are proud of the effort, organisation and sportsmanship shown by our entire team. Congratulations to every student who represented Monterey, and to those progressing to the regional competition.

💜 Wear It Purple Day at Monterey! 🌈

Reminder, On Tuesday 1st September, our Pride Captains and Pride Club are bringing Wear It Purple Day to The REY at lunchtime.

Wear It Purple Day is about showing support for LGBTQIA+ young people and creating safe, supportive and inclusive spaces where everyone can feel proud of who they are. It’s an important opportunity to celebrate diversity, strengthen belonging and show that everyone is welcome at Monterey.

Students are encouraged to add a 'splash of purple' to their normal school uniform and join in the lunchtime celebrations.

There will be face painting, live music, badge making with , a speech from our Pride Captains and, of course, Paint Dylan Purple! 💜

A huge thank you to our Pride Captains and Pride Club for organising the event and helping continue to build an inclusive and connected school community.

🌺 Singing out with Pese Mai! 🎶

We’re proud to share that Monterey students Xaio, Ceena and Alexis are part of the Pese Mai Choir preparing to perform at the Victorian State Schools Spectacular this Saturday, 29th August.

Meaning Sing Out in Samoan, Pese Mai brings Pasifika students from government schools together to celebrate the cultures of the Pacific through contemporary performance, while building confidence, positive connections and a strong sense of community.

At Monterey, ensuring students feel proud of their culture and identity is an important part of creating a school community where young people feel known, connected and able to participate fully. Xiao, Ceena and Alexis have been supported throughout the year by staff member Alana, who has rehearsed alongside the choir.

Congratulations to our Monterey performers and the entire Pese Mai Choir. We can’t wait to see you take the big stage! 🌺🎤👏

🏕️ Year 7 Camp Adventures! 🌿

Last week, our Year 7 students headed to Bayview Adventure Camp for two action-packed days of activities, connection and plenty of fun!

From building huts in the forest and taking on the giant swing, to kayaking around the lake and roasting marshmallows by the campfire, students had plenty of opportunities to try something new, work together and build stronger friendships.

For many students, camp also meant stepping outside their comfort zone, showing courage and persistence as they took on new challenges. Even the wet weather and a lot of mud couldn’t dampen their enthusiasm! 🌧️🥾

Experiences like Year 7 Camp are an important part of life at Monterey, giving students opportunities beyond the classroom to strengthen relationships with their peers and staff, build confidence and develop a greater sense of connection and belonging within our school community.

A big thank you to everyone who helped organise the camp, to our staff for their fantastic support, and of course to our Year 7 students for embracing the experience and making the most of every muddy moment! 👏💙
