The first thing I ask the students that I tutor is "What does your teacher expect?" One of the fundamental questions that many forget is what they are learning about. And that learning goal, or that task and what they are being marked on is what is central to what they produce. That is the all important thing to come back to.

Some sample primary school students' writing. Over the term holiday fortnight, why not have your children check out some of samples from their current year level and the year level above - see if they think they could do better - or pick up some tips for their next piece of writing.

What a competition. The SevenSteps 2026 Narrative Writing Competition winners and runners-up are extraordinary; check out some of the best efforts.

The competition was part of this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime celebration. Over 200 classes joined a live brainstorming lesson in May, where they planned and plotted stories together with SevenSteps staff, inspired by Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller.

Then teachers across Australia and New Zealand took the ideas back to their classrooms where their students wrote their stories.
