Last week our students have been joyfully immersed themselves in celebrating Chinese New Year through a range of meaningful experiences. From storytelling to hands-on craft activities and trying mini lion dances, the children embraced each opportunity with curiosity and enthusiasm as we welcomed the Year of the Fire Horse.
On Friday we were delighted to welcome the talented team from Red Dragon Martial Arts, who shared a vibrant and engaging Lion Dance performance with our community. It was a wonderful way to bring everyone together and conclude our week of celebrations in a meaningful and joyful spirit. Experiences like these allow culture and language to come alive in authentic ways, deepening children’s understanding of the world around them.
Fun Fact: Did you know?
The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar, guided by both the moon and the sun. The moon determines the months, while the sun ensures the seasons remain aligned. This is why Chinese New Year always begins in spring in China and is also known as the Spring Festival (Chun Jie).
新年快乐 — Happy New Year! 🧧🐎

At MIC, play spaces are never just about equipment.
They are designed as prepared environments, shaped by Montessori principles and informed by child development, with the aim of bringing out the very best in our students.
Our approach brings together several key elements. We begin with Montessori design principles, which remind us that environments quietly guide behaviour, learning, and relationships. We pair this with developmental psychology, ensuring spaces respond to how children think, move, collaborate, and grow at each stage of childhood. Just as importantly, we listen carefully to student voice, inviting children to share what excites them, challenges them, and helps them feel confident and connected.

Read the latest Montessori Moment from Principal Chris Peach on the Prepared Environment.
In his article this week Chris reflects on the importance of a prepared environment and the nature of the individual’s interaction. He outlines this concept, crucial to human development, and one of the hallmark contributions of Montessori to education
The child incarnates the environment – they take it in, absorb it, whatever is in the environment, both physical and psychic. Whatever interactions the child and adolescent have in this environment becomes the material for self-construction.
