Today, we welcomed a special guest to address the Class of 2026: distinguished Vikram Pawah (Master of Business Administration, 2000), CEO of BMW Group Australia and New Zealand.
‎ ‎
For Vikram, the celebration was especially meaningful. Despite earning two degrees, this was the first graduation ceremony he had attended, bringing him back to the university that helped shape his journey.
‎ ‎
Drawing on his international career, Vikram shared lessons on embracing change, investing in yourself and finding the courage to begin again. He encouraged our graduates to remain curious, seek guidance from others and use their success to help those around them move forward.

Mary Kane started legal practice at 60. Her daughter Laura Kane now helps shape the AFL Women's. Both shared the same VU law starting point. 👀⚖️

Laura graduated from VU in 2013 and built a career that eventually took her into one of Australian sport’s most influential leadership roles: Executive General Manager of AFLW, Health and Football Operations. 🏉

Laura’s experience inspired Mary to see a path into law for herself.

After years of thinking law wasn’t really an option, Mary returned to study, balanced uni with work and turned a decades-old ambition into a new career as a prosecutor for Bass Coast Shire Council.

They never sat in the same lecture together, but they studied many of the same subjects, learnt from some of the same lecturers and even gave Laura’s old textbooks a second lap. 📚

As VU celebrates 110 years of transforming lives through education, Mary and Laura’s family story is a reminder that learning has no age limit, and its opportunities can travel across generations.
