Connecting with Culture at La Trobe!

Recently, a group of our Aboriginal students had the opportunity to spend a week at La Trobe University taking part in a range of workshops celebrating Aboriginal culture, creativity and connection.

Across the week, students participated in basket weaving, creative art, Kewpie doll making, charcoal drawing and other hands on cultural activities. Just as importantly, they had the opportunity to listen to stories, learn about culture and Country, and hear from the people leading each of the workshops about their own journeys and experiences.

Our students spoke so positively about the week and particularly valued the opportunity to learn more about their own culture, make new connections and try things they hadn’t experienced before.

As Evie shared, “I’m grateful that we had the opportunity to do these things as Aboriginal students.”

Indigo reflected that the group “learnt so much about our culture that we didn’t know before.”

A huge thank you to everyone involved in creating such a welcoming and meaningful week for our students, and to La Trobe University for providing this wonderful opportunity.

Our mural is finished!

Our ACA Visual Art students have put the finishing touches on the incredible new mural outside our Year 7 building today and how great does it look 👏

A huge thank you to local artist wj_franklin, Andy from the Bendigo Art Gallery and our ACA Visual Art Coach, Ms Brand, for working alongside our students to bring this brilliant project to life.

This mural project has been facilitated by the Bendigo Art Gallery Learn team with support from the Victorian Department of Education's Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES) funding. Through Bendigo Art Gallery's VCES program, high-achieving students have the opportunity to collaborate with professional artists, explore new ideas, and challenge themselves through rich and engaging learning experiences.

Such a fantastic addition to our College and something our students can be proud to have helped create!

Talking all things BSE on Phoenix FM 📻

Recently, our 2026 College Captains Ava and Charlie headed into Phoenix FM to chat about all things BSE and share some of their experiences during their time at our College.

They were joined by our newly elected 2027 College Captains, Isabelle and Sean, who are getting ready to take on the role next year.

All four did a fantastic job representing BSE and sharing what makes our school community so special.

We’re incredibly lucky to have a community radio station like Phoenix FM that supports local schools and gives our students opportunities like this.

A big thank you to John Pearce for organising and having us along🎙️👏

Our Year Seven Science High Potential students recently stepped into the world of virtual reality through an interactive experience with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).

Students explored a virtual nuclear reactor, visited a synchrotron and experimented with an interactive periodic table.

They also heard from a representative from VR start up Start Beyond, learning how virtual reality content is created and discovering career opportunities in the growing immersive technologies industry where science, art, media, business and technology come together.

Exploring pathways at Bendigo TAFE 🔧🩺💇‍♀️

Today, a group of our Year 10 students had the opportunity to visit Bendigo TAFE and tour both the Bendigo City and Charleston Road campuses.

Guided by Shay from Bendigo TAFE, students explored the incredible facilities and learnt more about the huge range of courses and career pathways available.

From hair and beauty and allied health to plumbing, engineering, automotive, construction and electrical trades, there was plenty for our students to discover.

Opportunities like this are so valuable for our Year 10 students, allowing them to see different learning environments firsthand and explore pathways and careers they may not have previously considered.

A big thank you to Shay for showing us around and giving our students a fantastic insight into what Bendigo TAFE has to offer👏

YOU’RE NOT ALONE | WAKAKIRRI 2026

What an incredible achievement by our BSE students who took to the Wakakirri stage last Thursday with their student created Story Dance, ‘You’re Not Alone’.

Through movement, creativity and performance, our students told the powerful story of three young people experiencing different forms of bullying - physical, cyber and verbal. While each initially felt they were facing their challenges alone, they found strength and support in one another, learning to embrace their individuality and encouraging those around them to do the same.

It was a meaningful message, delivered through an outstanding performance and our students certainly made an impression!

BSE received an incredible six awards:

🏆 Storytelling Award for a Great Story
🏆 Ensemble Award for Dancing and Acting
🏆 Ensemble Award for Choreography
🏆 Ensemble Award for Overall Performance
🏆 Lead Cast Award for Live Singing
🏆 Award for Public Speaking

Wakakirri Ambassador Joti Van Carlos Gore described the performance as “Phenomenal, Empowering, and Inspirational!” and praised our students for their powerful storytelling, choreography, acting and ability to demonstrate the importance of community and supporting one another.

We are incredibly proud of every student involved in bringing ‘You’re Not Alone’ to life. From developing the story and choreography to performing on stage, this was a wonderful example of creativity, teamwork, courage and student voice.

A very special thank you to Ms Boddy, Mr Briggs and Mrs Seery for the time, encouragement and support they gave our students throughout the Wakakirri journey and in bringing their vision to the stage.

Congratulations to everyone involved what an achievement! 👏💙

Yesterday, our ACA students had the fantastic opportunity to work alongside local artist Wes Franklin during an after school masterclass, where they began designing a mural for the exterior wall of our Year 7 building near the canteen.

Wes shared examples of his incredible murals from schools and locations across Bendigo, giving students an insight into his creative journey, graphic design background, and public art projects. Inspired by his work, students enthusiastically brainstormed ideas, collaborated with one another, and began sketching concepts that will soon transform the space into a vibrant work of art.

Weather permitting, painting will begin next week, and we can’t wait to see our students’ creativity come to life.

Stay tuned as we share the mural’s progress over the coming weeks 🎨🖌️
