2026 Early Learning Matters Week is here! 🎉

From 3–9 August, early childhood services, educators, families and communities across Australia are coming together to celebrate the power of Learning Through Play.

The early years are where children learn to wonder, connect, create and grow, building the foundations they need to thrive in life. This week, we celebrate the people and places that make that possible every single day.

While early learning matters every day of the year, this is our week to say it together, loudly and proudly.

Shape how the Teacher Standards reflect practice

What is the purpose of the review?
The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Teacher Standards) were developed over 15 years ago. While the Teacher Standards continue to guide practice across Australia, they have not been formally reviewed since they were first adopted.

The review will consider the extent to which the Teacher Standards remain relevant, evidence-informed and aligned with an understanding of effective practice.

Your experience and perspectives will help identify areas where the Teacher Standards may be strengthened or improved to ensure they remain fit for purpose and inform recommendations on revisions needed.

How can I give feedback?
We encourage teachers, leaders and anyone with an interest in the Teacher Standards to take part.

You can share your views by completing our 20-minute survey.

The survey will be closed on 7 August.

The 2026 conference theme, ‘Holding the Past, Creating the Future‘ invites us to reflect on our policy and practice memory—what we have carried forward, where these ideas and approaches come from, and what may have been left out or lost within the dominant narratives of early childhood education and care. This theme encourages us to consider the cultural and historical legacies that shape our practices—what we choose to pass on—and the stories our sector will tell about this moment in time, as we continue shaping the future.

The ECA National Conference provides a platform for professional discourse relevant to the rights, wellbeing and early education of young children (birth to eight years). It is designed for everyone working to advance early childhood education and care in Australia, including:

• Service leaders and directors—shaping the future of early learning in their communities.
• Educators and teachers—building professional knowledge and practice across all settings.
• Policy makers and researchers—sharing the latest evidence and innovation.
• Sector partners and stakeholders—connecting with early childhood professionals nationwide.
