The theme for day 3 of Speech Pathology Week is Communication Creates Possibility to Grow!
At Mancel College, our Grade 1 and 2 students are developing the language foundations they need for success in mathematics and everyday life.
Through engaging activities in our Mini Woolworths and structured play sessions in a play cafe, students are learning about numbers, money, and other early numeracy concepts in meaningful, real-world contexts. These experiences help build confidence, independence, and practical skills that students can use in their daily lives.
Language is a vital part of learning mathematics. The Speech Pathology Team works alongside teaching staff and students to develop the vocabulary and concepts that support numeracy learning. By explicitly teaching and reinforcing key mathematical words, we help students understand, discuss, and apply mathematical ideas with greater confidence.
Current vocabulary goals for our Grade 1 and 2 students include words such as "same", "count", and "match". Our students also follow directions such as “find 3 apples and 2 bananas”. These foundational concepts support later mathematical skills, including shopping, handling money, calculating change, and participating in workplace tasks such as retail roles.
By building strong language skills, we are helping our students develop the communication and numeracy foundations they need to navigate everyday life with confidence and independence.

The theme for Speech Pathology Week Day 2 is Communication Creates Possibility to Learn. Speech pathologists at Mancel College support learning by helping build the language, literacy and communication skills needed across education settings. This week in their whole-class "Language Lizards" Speech Pathology intervention, Year 3-4 students used their language skills to talk about a picture. They could explore their ideas by describing, inferencing, and predicting within a class discussion. We talked about the setting, how the girl was feeling, and what might happen next. Year 3-4 students have also been supported this week with daily reading, Information Report writing, and Soundswrite lessons.

In Year 5/6, currently all students are participating in a whole-class vocabulary intervention focused on developing tier 2 academic vocabulary to support engagement with the curriculum. Tier 2 vocabulary are fairly frequent, useful words found across academic texts and disciplines but may not be words that students typically hear in everyday conversation. The intervention combines explicit vocabulary instruction with extended concept mapping to build a deep understanding of word meaning. So far, students have covered words including persuade, elaborate, compare, predict, eliminate.

This week is Speech Pathology Week! The theme for this week is Communication creates possibility, and each day we will be highlighting how the work our Speech Pathology team do helps to create possibility for our students. Today, we’re celebrating the many ways our students connect with others.

In Prep, our speech pathologists support students to build relationships and connect with others in ways that work for them. Through a morning greeting song, students are encouraged to welcome their peers and teachers using their preferred communication methods, including AAC talkers.

By modelling greetings, taking turns, sharing interests, and talking about how they feel, students develop the confidence to communicate, creating meaningful connections and a strong sense of belonging within their classroom community.

We were thrilled to welcome Australian sporting hero and weightlifting royalty, Deborah Acason, to speak with our students today.

Deborah shared her incredible journey as an elite athlete, representing Australia at five Commonwealth Games, where she won one gold, three silver and one bronze medal, as well as competing at two Olympic Games.

Her message about perseverance, resilience and always striving to do your best resonated strongly with our students. They were captivated by her stories, asked many thoughtful questions, and were inspired by the lessons she learned throughout her sporting career.

A special highlight was seeing Deborah's Commonwealth Games gold medal, which she generously shared with our students. 🏅

Deborah's story also struck a particular chord with our own teacher, Lexi Iacovou who could relate to many of the experiences shared. Before becoming a teacher, Lexi was also a weightlifter, making Deborah's journey especially personal and inspiring.

Thank you, Deborah, for an engaging and inspiring presentation and for encouraging our students to chase their goals with determination, confidence and a commitment to always giving their best.

Teaching & Learning Spotlight

Science is more than a subject... it's a way of thinking.

During National Science Week, we celebrate a learning area that encourages wonder, creativity and innovation. Science provides rich opportunities for students to explore ideas, ask "what if?" questions and investigate the world through their own unique lens.

One of the greatest strengths of Science is its ability to support and celebrate neurodiverse learners. Through hands-on experiences, teacher and student-led inquiry, visual thinking, pattern recognition, and collaborative problem solving, students can engage with Science in ways that align with their strengths and interests.

When we create inclusive Science learning environments, we empower all students to contribute their ideas, challenge assumptions, and become the thinkers and innovators of tomorrow.

What is even more exciting is that next year, we have two state of the art Science labs in our new building! We are all very excited to see how Science grows across the College.

Our students showcased their curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills through a range of innovative scientific investigations and projects. From exploring real-world challenges to presenting exciting discoveries, the enthusiasm and passion on display were truly inspiring.

Students explored the wonderful world of biology and ecology - seeds, plants and living things.

A huge congratulations to all participants for their hard work and dedication, and thank you to our staff, families, and community members who supported this fantastic event. The future of science is certainly in good hands!

Making Memories: Year 12 Formal 2026

The Year 12 Formal last week provided a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate their final year of schooling alongside friends, invited guests, and staff.

The evening commenced with parents joining students for canapés before departing, allowing students and staff to enjoy the remainder of the celebrations together. For the first time, students were able to invite a guest, adding an extra layer of excitement to this special occasion.

Highlights of the evening included heartfelt speeches, the photo booth, and plenty of dancing. Students were presented with a special keyring keepsake and enjoyed spending quality time with friends, guests, and staff throughout the night.

A wonderful evening filled with laughter, friendship, and memories that will last long after Year 12 is over!

From Potential to Powerhouse: Building Australia's Next Generation of Female Leaders

As an educator, our Deputy Head of College, Jodi Dew left this event feeling both inspired and hopeful.

Hearing about the life-changing impact of The Harding Miller Education Foundation scholarship programme was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when talented young women are given the support, opportunities and encouragement they deserve. Through scholarships, mentoring, technology and educational resources, the Foundation is helping high-potential students overcome barriers and realise their full potential.

The evening also prompted Jodi to reflect on the many remarkable young women at Mancel College. Every day, we see female students with incredible talent, determination and leadership potential. Programmes such as those offered by the Harding Miller Education Foundation demonstrate just how transformative it can be when young women are empowered with the resources and support they need to thrive.

It was a privilege to learn more about this remarkable programme and celebrate the achievements of the inspiring scholarship recipients, whose stories are shaping the future of leadership in Australia.

Teaching & Learning Spotlight in Year 5/6

In Science, Year 5/6 has been investigating reversible and irreversible changes to matter. We experimented with growing a crystal tree and then dissolved it and regrew it. The students are examining their new crystals as we continue to observe the changes in class each day.
