Mancel College (previously known as The Glenleighden School) has been a specialist education provider for more than 40 years. Run by a professional team, we are dedicated to exploring new pathways for children and young people with Language Disorder. Our school is home to quality education, supported by a range of multidisciplinary services. AHISA Leading, Learning and Caring Conference 2027

Our Head of College, Craig Duncan, is currently attending the three-day AHISA Leading, Learning and Caring Conference in Perth, joining educational leaders from across Australia to explore ideas, innovation, and leadership in education.

One of the highlights so far has been a thought-provoking session with John Somerset and Catherine Galvin from Somerset Education, focusing on financial literacy and its important role in effective educational leadership.

We are excited about the possibility of welcoming John to Mancel College in the future to support leadership development for our team.

At Mancel College, we believe that continuous learning, professional growth, and investing in great leadership ultimately benefit our students, staff, and wider community.

"My dream is a world where people with DLD are included." 💜

A simple but powerful message from our very own superstar, Sadie, who recently addressed City Council to help raise awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

Sadie's passion for creating understanding has inspired hundreds of people to learn more about DLD. Last year, her X Marks the Spot for DLD Treasure Hunt raised more than $9,000 to support awareness, advocacy, and inclusion.

The X Marks the Spot for DLD Treasure Hunt is back in Brisbane on Friday 16th October 2026 to celebrate !

Follow the clues, uncover the hidden signs and help us reveal the hidden treasure of understanding DLD because awareness is the real prize.

Once again, the course has been set by our very own Sadie, a young student with Language Disorder who is keen for you to walk in her shoes for an evening. She has plotted an epic journey through challenges like the cave of confusing clues, island of lost words, path of patience, connection cliffs and bridge of understanding all leading to treasure beneath the Story Bridge!

Friday 16th October 2026.

$5 Entry - includes a sausage sizzle, ice cream and DJ dance party at the finish line.

Meet at 5pm for a 5:30PM start on the lawn of the Picnic Island Green at South Bank.

Event concludes at Captain Burke Park under the Story Bridge.

A huge congratulations to Brendan on achieving a perfect score in his IA3 General Mathematics assessment. This outstanding achievement is a wonderful reflection of Brendan’s hard work, focus and dedication to his studies.

We are incredibly proud of Brendan and this impressive result. As Brendan and his peers embark on their final term of secondary schooling, we celebrate the hard work, growth and memories that have shaped their journey to this point. As we approach the end of the school year, it is a powerful time to reflect on growth, progress, and the individual journeys of every student.

At Mancel College, we use Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) because we believe every student deserves a personalised pathway that focuses on their strengths, aspirations and future success. Unlike traditional deficit-focused planning approaches such as ISPs or ICPs, our ILPs place the student at the centre of the conversation, bringing together family aspirations, student goals and targeted learning priorities to create a plan that is meaningful, achievable and future-focused.

An ILP is not simply a document. It is a living plan that guides teaching, informs support, and ensures every adjustment, intervention and learning opportunity has a clear purpose and real impact.

At this time of year, our teams carefully review every ILP, celebrating the growth students have achieved across academic, social, communication, independence and personal development goals. While progress looks different for every learner, every step forward matters. These reviews allow us to recognise achievements, evaluate the effectiveness of our supports, and begin planning the next stage of each student's learning journey.

Because at Mancel College, success is not measured by comparing students to others. It is measured by the growth each student makes from where they started.

Clear learning intentions create confident learners.

When students know What Am I Learning Today? (WALT) and What I'm Looking For (WILF) at the beginning of a lesson, they have a clear roadmap for success. Revisiting these at the end of the learning experience helps students reflect on their progress, celebrate achievements and identify their next steps.

For students with a language disorder, WALT and WILF are especially powerful. They provide structure, reduce cognitive load, support understanding of expectations and make learning more accessible. By explicitly naming the learning goal and success criteria, we help students focus on what matters most and build confidence in their ability to succeed. At Mancel College, we have created our own visuals that are displayed in all of our learning spaces. his consistent approach provides students with familiar, accessible supports wherever they learn, helping to create a shared language of learning across the College.

The real impact? Students become more engaged, more independent, and more able to articulate what they have learned. Teachers gain valuable insight into student understanding, while learners develop ownership of their growth. Small changes in practice can make a significant difference, ensuring every student has the opportunity to experience success and make meaningful progress.

This week, members of our leadership team completed Warden Training as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and prepared school environment.

The training concluded with hands-on fire extinguisher practice using virtual reality technology, giving staff the opportunity to put their learning into action in realistic emergency scenarios. 🔥

Supporting Every Learner Through Explicit Instruction

At Mancel College, we believe students achieve their best when learning is clear, structured and supported every step of the way. That's why our teaching is underpinned by the Explicit Instruction model.

🔹 I Do – Our teachers explicitly teach and model new concepts, demonstrating the skills, strategies and thinking required for success.

🔹 We Do – Students and teachers work together to practise and apply new learning, with scaffolds, feedback and guidance provided along the way.

🔹 You Do – Students independently demonstrate their understanding and mastery, building confidence, independence and ownership of their learning.

Importantly, we don't simply move students through these phases and hope for success. We actively support our learners throughout all three stages of the process, ensuring they receive the right level of instruction, guidance and challenge at the right time. Whether learning a new skill, practising with support or applying knowledge independently, our students know they are never learning alone.

By providing this intentional and responsive support, we create classrooms where every student can experience success, make progress and develop the confidence to become capable, independent learners.
