📚💙 A Special Gift for Our Goodstart Fernvale Families 💙📚

We are excited to share that every family at Goodstart Early Learning Fernvale will receive a copy of the beautiful children's book, You're Not a Nonny Nu Nanna, We Love You, written by local Somerset author Donita Bundy, illustrated by Marita Reynolds.

Produced by the Somerset Regional Council, this heartfelt story has been created to help children under the age of nine understand and appreciate older people who may be displaying signs of dementia. Through a child-friendly and compassionate approach, the book encourages empathy, understanding, and meaningful conversations between children and their families.

As our community grows older, learning about dementia and how it can affect our loved ones is more important than ever. By sharing this story together, we can help children build kindness, compassion, and stronger connections across generations.

We encourage all of our families to enjoy this special book together and use it as an opportunity to talk about the importance of showing patience, love, and understanding to grandparents, older relatives, neighbours, and members of our community.

A heartfelt thank you to Somerset Regional Council, local author Donita Bundy and illustrator Marita Reynolds for providing this wonderful resource to our families. National Pyjama Day is all about raising awareness and supporting children in foster care. The funds that get raised for this day help provide educational resources, learning opportunities, and support to children who need it most, giving them the chance to thrive and reach their full potential.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.

Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.

Today we are celebrating an incredible milestone for one of our amazing Nursery Educators, Kathie – 10 years of dedicated service with Goodstart Early Learning! 💜

For the past decade, Kathie has shown unwavering dedication, kindness, and compassion, helping to nurture and support our youngest learners during some of the most important years of their lives. Her gentle nature, patience, and genuine love for children have made a lasting impact on countless families, children, and colleagues.

Kathie, thank you for the care, commitment, and positivity you bring to our nursery every day. Your passion for early childhood education and the relationships you've built over the years make you such a valued member of our team.
