Dear families,

We hope you and your children are enjoying your time at our Kindy.

If you’ve had a positive experience with us, we would truly appreciate you sharing it as a Google review. Your words help other families find us and continue to grow our beautiful kindy community. You can leave a review here:

Sugar and spice and everything nice! We ignited our senses through the children's investigation of gingerbread cookies, beginning with a sensory exploration of spices, smelling cinnamon's warmth, touching ginger's grainy texture, and tasting the sweet-spicy combination that makes gingerbread so special.

Watch us strengthen our finger dexterity, pre-writing skills, and fine motor muscles as we pour, combine, mix, roll, mould, and cut our gingerbread shapes, then ice them with intricate and delicate care, carefully maneuvering icing tools across each cookie's surface.

Cooking integrated through STEM allows us to explore rich mathematical concepts, including volume, weight, mass, measurement, counting, and spatial awareness. We also investigate scientific concepts of changing matter: solids transforming into semi-liquids as we cream butter and sugar together, then reforming into solid dough. Through baking, we observe how heat changes the dough's form, from soft and springy to firm and deliciously edible treats!

"Dragon Butterfly, Dragon Butterfly, show us the way you fly through the sky!"

As Children lead through their "Zone of Proximal Development" according to Vygotsky's Theory, their embodiment of imaginative and mystical creatures enhances their symbolic thinking, abstract reasoning, and mental representation as they view their worlds and play through multiple perspectives and lenses. Their child-led imaginative play not only develops their social, emotional, and language skills, but it also develops their executive functioning skills, such as planning ("What powers does my Dragon Butterfly have?"), working memory as they recall their imagined Dragon Butterfly character traits and their created storyline, and cognitive flexibility as they adapt to an evolving narrative through their play.

"I am a Dragon Butterfly who lays eggs in a secret den. They are magic eggs, you cannot see them!" "I drink water from leaves and eat seeds, and I fly high in the sky so you cannot catch me!"

Child-led play is a realm of magic and freedom, where children can let their imaginations soar. It is a joyous journey that inspires and motivates us to value child-initiated play as serious learning and protect it as essential pedagogy.

Mark making in sand allows children to navigate through Indigenous knowledge systems and storytelling traditions tens of thousands of years old. Through their tactile senses, experimentation and play children Build their cultural awareness and respect for First Nations peoples
as they recognise Indigenous culture as living, relevant, and valuable. They begin to understand communication takes various forms across many cultures as they build upon their visual literacy through symbol meaning and code, further enhancing their pre-writing skills through mark making and symbolic representation.

Let us lead our Discovery of culture and ways of "being" through our senses with mindfulness and calmness within the meditative aspect of playful sand marking.

"I know who I want to be in this moment, my play will empower me, let me lead."

Through imagination, art, and creativity, children develop their own knowledge, language, relationships, identity, critical thinking, and meaning making within their play.

Mixing potions and experimenting with mud strengthens their identity through connection with the natural environment and with each other, while projecting their "being" into their play. I experience this moment through my senses: touch, sight, scent, aural, and I am free to explore through my never-ending wonder!

The magic of child-led play!

Children learn best through experiential play, especially when immersed in the natural world. As they engage in simple yet meaningful activities - like throwing rocks into muddy puddles - they follow their own curiosity and begin to uncover scientific and mathematical concepts organically.

Through this natural inquiry, children explore elements of STEM such as gravity, force, kinetic motion, angle of projection, air resistance and mass. We are playing, we are getting wet and muddy and joyfully learning - while being exactly who we want to be!
