Fin Focus Research A Citizen Science project collecting shark and ray sightings in the Exmouth/Ningaloo Region

The project records shark and ray biodiversity and distribution in the Ningaloo Reef/Exmouth region, in order to further our knowledge and assist in conservation and management decisions. The project uses Citizen Science by collecting sightings and observations from both the Whale Shark Industry and Recreational ocean using community. Beginning in 2016, whale shark operators complete shark and ray

survey forms when operating ecotourism tours. The number of vessels participating is usually between 5-11 a season. The Recreational Project records sightings of rare or threatened species, and utilises the local community of divers, fishermen, boaters, beach walkers etc. Fin Focus also collects any other relevant information regarding to shark activity and behaviour, feeding/predation, reproduction/nurseries and interactions. Anyone with relevant shark footage, sightings or information is more than welcome to share this with Fin Focus through Facebook messenger or email [email protected]

A big thanks to all the citizen scientists in WA for sharing their leopard shark sightings with Fin Focus Research! We now have the 100th individual leopard shark in the growing Photo ID catalogue: this one sighted in Ningaloo Reef and named "Louise", submitted by Luciano Morales Corinaldesi, aka .in.the.jungle 💙 Thank you Luchi for all your leopard searching enthusiasm 🙌

A new paper led by Dr Jack Ingelbrecht on kinship and genetic diversity of giant shovelnose rays in the eastern Indian Ocean

Four full and four half sibling pairs were detected amongst 90 giant shovelnose rays, including one pair of half siblings separated by over 600 km of coastline, providing evidence of long-distance, likely parental, movement along the Western Australian Coast.
