Yesterday we made the Greek dish ‘Spanakopita’ at Kinder.🇬🇷🇬🇷
One of our three-year-old Kinder friends brings it in their lunchbox and talks about it with such pride. This has stirred up lots of curiosity, and questions from the other children. ‘What does it taste like?’ ‘How do you make it?’
We decided to ask this family if they would share their traditional family recipe with us, so we could try to make it at Kinder.
Not only did the family provide us with the recipe, but they very generously brought in a huge bunch of fresh Silverbeet grown in their home garden for us to use.
The children took turns preparing the ingredients. This included: chopping the Silverbeet, Spring Onion and Dill; stirring carefully while sautéing the vegetables in the frypan; helping crumble the feta; sprinkling in the Nutmeg and Parmesan; whisking the eggs and pouring them in.
It was then time to assemble, which meant layering the filo pastry and brushing on butter and oil. Then adding the filling and topping it off with more pastry.
As we placed it in the oven, we were excited and had lots of wondering about what it might taste like.
Once golden brown and cool, we all gathered together to enjoy our hard work. We listened carefully to the crunchy pastry as we cut in to enjoy a piece each!
We value our relationships with families, and their cultures and traditions deeply at Euroa Kinder, and experiences such as this strengthen children's identity and sense of belonging. These experiences also provide opportunity for children to practice real-world skills in a safe and supported environment.🥬🥬
