So I got to write a piece about work for The Green Agenda: explains a bit about where we are at with everything right now!

In this intimate piece of writing, Dodie Henderson reflects on the ongoing work of caring for a small farm, healing land, the work of living, and the reasons for the work we do now.

This is what is on my mind...hard to comprehend that here, in Australia, crops are being drowned, while elsewhere...the nature of climate change...

But thoughts are turning to adaptation: 'Somalia's minister for Agriculture Madobe Nunow pointed out that his country was hoping to alter food production in a way that would reduce dependency on rainfall frequency. "We need to invest in water resources by harvesting water when it rains, because often in Somalia we are between floods and drought. We can harvest the water and use it for irrigation and reduce our dependency on rain-fed farming."

A famine is increasingly likely in East Africa as rains fail for the fourth consecutive year. Violent conflicts in the Horn of Africa are undermining efforts to help the populations in need.

So like a lot of people in the world right now, we have been a bit quiet lately as we contemplate what lies ahead, on the basis of what lies behind us. Green Agenda's Quarterly Journal prompted a bit of a reflection on work recently, and provided an opportunity for a bit of soul searching! https://greenagenda.org.au/2022/10

Bluey and Liquorice from my 2019 ‘High Society’ exhibition feature in the current (August) issue of Australian Geographic Magazine as part of a large feature on Australia’s national bird - the budgerigar.⁣
⁣
I particularly loved this feature as it introduced me to Sparkie Williams (RIP). He was an English budgerigar known for his repertoire of 583 words and eight complete nursery rhymes. Hatched and bred in North East England, Sparkie was owned by Mrs. Mattie Williams. At 3 1/2 years old Sparkie won a 1958 BBC talking bird contest against 2768 opponents. He even released a record that sold 20,000 copies. “On its B side he plays gangster Sparkie the Fiddle & Australian actress Lorrae Desmond played his moll.” He died aged 8 & is in the Great North Museum: Hancock in Newcastle upon Tyne. ⁣
⁣
Look him up on youtube, he was a marvel. ⁣

Rebecca Solnit, herself a purveyor of hope, and her experience of seeing Orwell's garden. Beauty and simple pleasures negating his insights into human behaviour...

It turns out that George Orwell, the English author of 1984, thought to be stern and practical, planted lots of roses. Learning why offers us a valuable lesson in happiness.
