There’s a point you get to where the practice is doing fine and you’re not. And nobody around you can tell the difference.

I got there about ten years into dentistry. Three practices by then, and I was carrying every one of them on my own.

It took me years to see what was actually going on. About eighty-five percent of what makes a practice work has nothing to do with teeth. And nobody ever taught us that part.

So a patient sits there nodding, says they’ll have a think. And you never hear from them again.

Your team comes to you with every small thing. Because you’re the only one who’s ever been shown how to handle it.

And after enough of that, you start to think this is simply what owning a practice costs.

It isn’t, and you’re not the only one who’s thought it was.

I’m Vicky. I’ve been a dentist for over fifteen years, and I opened three practices and sold two.

For most of that time my team couldn’t get through a day without me. I got home with nothing left for anyone. And I’d stopped feeling like myself somewhere along the way.

It took me years to work this out. About 85% of what makes a practice work has nothing to do with teeth.

Nobody ever taught us that.

So when it got hard, we went and learned more dentistry. We got better at the part that was already fine.

That’s why you can be very good at this and still have a nurse knocking on the door mid-treatment because nobody will make a decision without you.

Still get home so late and so tired that you eat standing up and go straight to bed.

Still catch yourself in the mirror one morning wondering when you last did anything that was just for you.

That was never you doing it wrong. And you’re not the only one who feels it.

So I’ve decided to do something for the women in this profession.

Dentists, we are honestly a funny bunch 😂

$80,000 on equipment or CPD? (And not just once)

“Well, obviously. It’s an investment I’ll work hard to pay off.” (Trading time for money. Giving yourself way more pressure.)

Courses. Technology. Materials. The practice. The team.

Absolutely.

But spending money on something that gives us more time, more support, more freedom or simply makes our own life better?

Suddenly we need a 14-page business case, our partner’s permission and three working days to think about it 😂

And I’ve absolutely been guilty of spending on courses that were never aligned with me.

I could justify investing in almost anything if I could attach productivity, patient care or professional development to it.

But investing in myself simply because it would make my life better?

That somehow felt indulgent. No-one around me did that. (I was spending time in the wrong circles).

I started questioning that 6 years ago. It feels like a lifetime ago.

Because investing in yourself doesn’t always mean buying something fancy.

Sometimes it’s getting help.

Outsourcing the thing that drains you.

Paying for convenience.

Taking the trip.

Buying back your time.

Or choosing something purely because it brings you joy, without needing to turn it into a profit-driven KPI.

We spend so much of our careers investing in becoming better dentists.

Maybe we’re allowed to invest in having better lives too. 💛
