What an inspiring evening at the ATCC Annual Gala Dinner and Business Awards 2024 Night, celebrating the achievements of the Tamil community in business and their contributions to a multicultural Australia. I was honoured to attend as a VIP guest, invited by Anton Rock Fernando, President of the Australian Tamil Chamber of Commerce (ATCC).
The event was well-organised, and it was great to see our NSW politicians, Premier Chris Minns, Hugh McDermott MP, and Dr Andrew Charlton MP show their support for the Tamil business community.
I was particularly inspired by the accomplishments of the Tamil diaspora, who continue to make a positive impact globally while maintaining our cultural heritage. Meeting Shaun Christie-David was a special moment for me. Shaun is the founder of Plate it Forward, a social enterprise intertwining delicious food with powerful social impact.
The guest speakers—Tharani Jegatheeswaran (Deloitte’s) Shekar Mani (Saravana Bhavan, Shaun Christie-David, and Naraln Viswanathan (Vokiva)—shared insightful stories that really resonated with the audience.
Congratulations Anton and ATCC Board for an unforgettable and inspiring evening.

New migrants may struggle with some of our unusual celebrations in Australia.
Did you know that 1st August is designated as Horses Birthday in the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia? It started in the racing industry where horses are raced according to age, which caused confusion when entering races. The solution: a standardised birthday.
One of my favourite charities is Riding for the Disabled Ryde (RDA) who is having an Open Day to celebrate Horse's birthday on 28 July. RDA provides therapeutic riding programs to help children and adults with disabilities.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our migrant families to enjoy a fun-filled day and discover the incredible work of this dedicated team of volunteers and their programs.

It was an honour to share my Australian migrant journey and insights on networking at the recent ‘Women Entrepreneurship’ event organised by the Australian Tamil Business Chamber of Commerce. During my talk, I highlighted the importance of building strong connections and offered practical tips that have guided me to where I am today.
Coming from a Malaysian-Tamil background, it was especially meaningful to address an audience of fellow migrants, both men and women, who are eager to forge their own paths in Australia,
Thank you Anton and the ATCC for the privilege of being part of this Panel and for the opportunity to speak alongside four remarkable women.

It was a pleasure to meet the Hon. Andrew Giles MP, Federal Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, and hear about the government’s initiatives for Skilled Migration.
Minister Giles also took the opportunity to hear the community's views on skilled migration in the Macquarie Park Ryde business precinct.

I’m honoured to be the incoming President of the Macquarie Ryde Business Chamber for 2023/24.
It is a great privilege to work with our new Committee to support our local businesses. We look forward to organising events that facilitate networking for members and provide valuable insights and knowledge to members. We will also explore opportunities to collaborate with other Chambers, as well as being advocates with relevant authorities to enhance economic activity in the Macquarie Park Ryde area.
On 6 Nov, the Chamber is delighted to organise a Diwali event, titled "Celebrating the Indian Contribution to the Economy of Macquarie Park Ryde," hosted by Heritage Bank. It's an occasion to celebrate the diverse and valuable contributions of the Indian community to our local economy."

A wonderful evening last night attending the Christmas Carols at North Ryde Common. Congratulations to the Rotary Clubs of Macquarie and North Ryde for all the organisation to make this a fabulous event for the community - the first one since Covid. Lovely to see families out enjoying themselves in spite of a wintery summer's day. Congratulations to Heritage Bank for being a sponsor and thanks Odette Quine for inviting me as your guest.

Diwali week came to an end for me on Sunday with the Ryde’s Diwali festival was in full swing on Sunday 30 October on the North Ryde Common. Congratulations to Kedarnath Pagaddinnimath from the Ryde Indian Association for putting together a spectacle of dances, songs, fashion show. Our VIPs showed their support and enthusiasm to celebrate diversity and inclusion in the community.
Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance as light is a metaphor for knowledge and consciousness. Let’s pray that this is a year of peace for the world.

Heritage Bank-Macquarie Centre celebrated Diwali on 24 October to promote diversity and inclusion in the community. The Bank was beautifully done up with colourful decorations and their Indian staff wore traditional attire. It was also an opportunity to wear my saree.
It was an honour to be invited to do storytelling on the origins of Diwali. Thanks to Odette Quine NSW Heritage Bank Manager for the honour.
Traditional Diwali sweets and cupcakes were served. One of my hobbies is storytelling about Indian mythology.

20 years ago, I was in Jakarta with friends waiting to go to Bali.
The phone rang about 5:00am from Sydney. We were told about the Bali bombing - we were not aware of the immense tragedy that had unfolded in Bali.
We were in a state of shock! We decided not to go to Bali - how could we be enjoying ourselves with such devastation & death around - hard to comprehend!
I remember every minute of the next few days! We went to the Jakarta Marriott to listen to the Australian Embassy briefings. Sadly, the the angry Australians wouldn’t even allow Indonesian journalists in. As I was leaving, I bought some beautiful coasters from the gift boutique in the hotel front.
Sadly, in spite of all the security, on 5 August 2003, the Jakarta Marriot was the target of another terrorist bombing - 12 people died, 150 injured. My thoughts went to the people in that Gift Boutique- they would not have survived! I wept with sadness for all those people.
I’ve been reflecting the last two days at the cruelty inflicted on innocent people who were enjoying themselves. Why do people resort to terrorism? We must work for peace!
