Spotlight.

Kyle started at Story in 2021 after attending a self defence and mindset session with his football team. Kyle’s athletic ability was obvious and when he started he learned very quickly.

After experiencing early success Kyle struggled to rely on his technique against higher level opposition when he was so naturally gifted athletically. This is very common for kids who are naturally athletic and this is normally the time they quit. We call this the ‘prodigy’s dilemma’.

But Kyle didn’t quit.

Kyle slowed himself down, listened to his coach Adam and attended more classes than anyone in the history of our BJJ Program. Kyle started striking, he started Taekwondo and helping in junior classes. Kyle gave himself to the process.

On June 12 Kyle is the Co Main event on fighting for the -100kg CJJ Championship Belt. From the outside it looks like Kyle has risen out of nowhere. It may look like he hasn’t paid his dues.

But we have watched him grow slowly. We have watched him overcome. We have watched him bomb out of competitions in the first round and watched him win Gold all via submission.

Even with all of this success, and the biggest match of his young career in a few weeks last night Kyle dropped in to our Epping Kids BJJ class to help teach some new white belts.

We believe, no, we know that Kyle is a champion. Belts, medals and accolades don’t change who he is. Kyle is a champion in life. That’s worth more than any belt.

Well done to all students who participated in our Competition Day. For many this was their first experience in a competition environment. Lots of growth today!
