Next weekend, one of southern Sydney's longest-running community events turns 45. 🎑

The Oatley West Community Festival runs Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August at Oatley West Public School, and it has been a fixture of the local calendar for four and a half decades.

What's on: carnival rides, including the Super Slide, the Storm and the Tea Cups. Market stalls, games, food, live entertainment, a silent auction, the raffle, and the festival's famous Art Show. Plus Trash & Treasure, which is both a genuine local institution and the single biggest fundraiser of the weekend.

Proceeds go to the Oatley West P&C and straight back into the school.

Forty-five years is worth pausing on. It means parents who once wandered the festival as students are now bringing their own children through the gate. That kind of continuity isn't an accident. A community earns it by showing up year after year and doing the unglamorous work: running the stalls, staffing the gate, counting the float.

Dymocks Tutoring Talent 100's Hurstville Hub sits just up the road, and we work with students from across the Georges River area every week. Communities like this one are a large part of why those students arrive with the curiosity they do.

Congratulations to the Oatley West Public School community on 45 years. Here's to the next 45. πŸŽ‰

There's a university deadline just over three weeks away that a surprising number of Year 12 students miss completely.

The UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme closes on 11 September 2026.

Here's why it matters. SRS lets participating universities make you an early offer using criteria other than, or in addition to, your ATAR. Your school rates your aptitudes, and institutions can also consider your Year 11 studies and your EAS application if you have one. Offers are made on 12 November, well before ATARs are released.

In practice that means a student can walk into the written exams already holding a university offer. The psychological difference that makes in October is hard to overstate.

What to do in the next three weeks:
πŸ“‹ Check which of your preferred universities and courses actually participate in SRS. Not all of them do.
πŸ“‹ Submit your UAC application and SRS application before 11 September. You cannot add it once the scheme closes.
πŸ“‹ Speak to your careers adviser this week about your school's recommendation.
πŸ“‹ While you're there, check whether you're eligible for EAS or any bonus point schemes. Two or three points genuinely shifts preferences.

Worth noting: SRS offers come in two forms. Unconditional, with nothing further to meet, and conditional, where you'll need to satisfy criteria such as a minimum ATAR or course prerequisites before it's confirmed in December Round 2.

A few other dates for your phone. 30 September is the UAC early bird fee deadline. 26 November closes the main round. ATARs land 16 December, and the first Year 12 offer round follows on 23 December.

A strong ATAR opens doors. Understanding the system opens them wider.

Eight weeks to the first written exam. Most students will spend this period studying reactively, working on whatever feels most urgent that night. Top students do the opposite. They work backwards. 🎯

Build your run-in plan in four steps.

1. Start at 13 October and count back.
Write out the eight weeks. Mark your exam dates on the right weeks. You now have a finite, visible runway instead of a vague sense of "soon".

2. Reserve the final two weeks entirely.
Weeks 7 and 8 are for full timed papers and targeted repair only. No new content. If you're still learning material in October, the plan has failed. Protect those weeks now, before something else claims them.

3. Allocate weeks 1 to 6 by cost, not by comfort.
List every topic where you dropped marks in trials. Rank them by how many marks they cost and how likely they are to reappear. Highest cost and highest likelihood goes first. Do not start with the topic you happen to enjoy most.

4. One full paper per subject, per week, under exam conditions.
Timed. No notes. No pausing. Then mark it against the marking guidelines rather than your own judgment. The gap between what you wrote and what the guidelines reward is your entire study list.

This plan takes about 40 minutes to build. It will save you dozens of misdirected hours.

Dymocks Tutoring Talent 100 mentors build this with every student, then hold them to it.

Eight weeks until the first HSC written exam. This is the window where outcomes get decided.

Here's what separates the students who climb in the final stretch from the ones who plateau. It isn't raw talent, and it isn't hours logged. It's direction.

Knowing which topics are actually costing you marks. Knowing how markers award them. Knowing what to drill this week rather than next. That's the difference between studying hard and studying in the right place.

That's what Dymocks Tutoring Talent 100 is built to provide. Mentors who have sat the HSC themselves and then trained to teach it. A structured system with a deliberate plan for every one of your subjects, rather than ad hoc help once you're already behind.

The 2026 HSC has already started. Not in October. Now.

On 10 August, 12,958 students began their HSC oral and performance examinations. That's 8,487 students sitting performance exams across Music, Drama and Dance, and 4,987 sitting oral language exams across 50 language courses.

The oral exams run on Saturdays across five weeks. The performance exams stretch across six. Around 35% of this year's cohort is completing a course with a practical component, which means for roughly one in three HSC students, the exam period is already live.

For everyone else, the written exams begin on 13 October and run through to 5 November. More than 80,000 students will sit 123 exams over 18 days at 780 exam centres.

Read that date again. 13 October. From today, that is eight weeks.

Eight weeks is not much time. But it is enough time, and the distinction matters enormously. Eight weeks of deliberate, well-directed work will move a mark. Eight weeks of vague intention will not.

The students who finish strongest from here are not the ones with the most time left. They're the ones with the clearest plan for it.

At Dymocks Tutoring Talent 100, our mentors have sat exactly where you're sitting now. They know what eight focused weeks looks like, because they've executed them.

Rise above. 🎯

Trials week is nearly done. Here's the mindset that separates the students who bounce back from the ones who spiral.

At Dymocks Tutoring Talent 100, the students who improve the most between trials and the HSC aren't the ones who never drop a mark. They're the ones who treat every result as information, not a verdict.

A lower-than-expected trial mark isn't a prediction of your HSC. It's a map. It shows you exactly where the next weeks of work should go.

The high-performance frame:
βœ… A mark is data, not destiny
βœ… Every lost mark points to a fixable gap
βœ… The final stretch rewards precision, not panic

Our mentors have sat exactly where you're sitting now. They coach students to execute the run-in to the HSC with a clear head and a clear plan.

If trials shook your confidence this week, good. Now use them. πŸ’ͺ

Your trial results are in, or close to it. Here's how to use them to sharpen your university strategy.

Your school will typically provide an ATAR estimate following trials. That estimate is not your final ATAR. But it's the most accurate data point you have right now, and the students who plan around it are better positioned than those who don't.

Five things to do right now:
1. Find the real ATARs for your target courses. UAC publishes Main Round cutoffs every year. Check the Clearly-In ATAR: not the lowest historical cutoff, but the number that puts you comfortably inside.
2. Structure your preferences list strategically. At minimum: two genuine comforts (preferences below your projected ATAR), and one or two stretches.
3. Check early entry deadlines. They're happening now. UAC EAS, university early entry programs, and scholarship applications all have August and September deadlines.
4. Review subject scaling. If your trial results show stronger-than-expected performance in a subject, check how that subject scales in the ATAR calculation.
5. Get mentorship from someone who's navigated this. Dymocks Tutoring Talent 100 mentors have been through this process, and into the courses many of our students are targeting.

The HSC is the ex*****on phase. Plan accordingly.

You've sat your trial. You have a rough idea of how it went. Now what?

Most students do one of two things: move straight to the next subject, or replay what went wrong in their head for three days. Neither is the right approach.

Here's the systematic post-trial debrief that Dymocks Tutoring Talent 100 mentors use with Year 12 students.

Step 1: Get your marked paper back. Every mark you lost is a data point. You need the paper, not just the number.

Step 2: Categorise your errors:
* Content gaps (you didn't know the material)
* Exam technique errors (you knew it but didn't communicate it clearly)
* Time management issues (you ran out of time before your strongest responses)

Step 3: Build a targeted fix list. Identify which category cost you the most marks. Fix that first.

Step 4: Practise the specific skill deliberately. Not the whole subject. Just the gap.

Step 5: Replicate the conditions. Timed. Pen on paper. No distractions. Repeat until it holds.

The students who move the most between trials and the actual HSC are not the ones who work the most hours. They're the ones who work on the right things. Your marked trial tells you exactly what those are.

Use it.
