Representatives from the Epping Club came to officially open our new sensory room. Have a look at this short video of the opening, and keep an eye on our page in the coming weeks to see our students enjoying the new facilities.
Thank you to The Epping Club for all your support.

As part of the Independence and Pathways (ETIP) program, Rooms 3, 4 and 6 (plus a couple of Room 12 volunteer helpers!) enjoyed an incursion last Friday with EnviroMentors by Keep Australia Beautiful - learning all about recycling and what goes in each of the different bins. The students enjoyed practising sorting rubbish into different bins, something all Karonga students are learning and practising in their classrooms with our new recycling and composting programs this year!

On Wednesday, our primary students took part in National Simultaneous Storytime. This is an Australian initiative that encourages people to read together, and schools across the country take part. The book this year was Luna Roo: the Kangaroo Baller. The students listened to the story and took part in different activities related to the book.

This week is National Road Safety Week. We take road safety very seriously here at Karonga. We use the path around the oval to practice walking safely together as a group and then we use the traffic crossing to learn about road safety. Some classes use the skills that they have learnt by going out on community access excursions.
And of course, Safe is one of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) rules!

It’s National Careers Week and we thought we’d share a little bit about what Careers Education looks like at Karonga.
With the launch of the ETIP program (Explicit Teaching of Independence Pathways) led by Zoe (with the help of Ella, Sujung and Michelle), Karonga has been able to focus more on Careers Education, tailored to our students’ needs. In these sessions our students get the opportunity to learn work/life skills in a supportive familiar environment, starting from kindergarten all the way through to Year 12. This includes doing jobs around the school such as collecting compost and recycling, cleaning, maintaining and running mini Woolies, and participating in community access. These skills are hugely beneficial for helping the students transition into post school options after Year 12, including supportive work and day programs. Our senior students are then getting the opportunity to go out on Thursdays with Zoe and Sujung to visit different day programs or workplaces to help prepare them for this transition.
Careers Education also extends to students’ practical lessons where students are learning and practising these workplace skills in the kitchen and garden with Ella, with many of the older students now independently working in the kitchen to prepare simple meals and clean up afterwards by themselves.

This week we held our Anzac Walk. Representatives from The Epping Club, The King's School, and Karonga P&C walked with students and staff to our Anzac Garden where we observed a short silence and listened to music from the bagpipes and the flute.
Thank you to Bob the bagpiper for playing for us, The King's School students for their help, and The Epping Club for their support of our school.

Reminder: Monday is a public holiday in lieu of Anzac Day.
Have a great weekend and we will see all students back on Tuesday.
