Karonga School

Frankie has been working at Karonga School for a few weeks now so we thought it was time to show you what he has been up to. Frankie's role is very varied, from meeting students and helping them get to class, to spending time in the classroom. The students are learning to be kind to Frankie, and as you know, 'kind' is one of Karonga School's Positive behaviour for Learning (PBL) values.
When all that work is finished, Frankie likes nothing more than finding a sunny spot for a nap!

You may remember that we officially opened our new sensory room in June with The Epping Club. Now, we would like to share some photos of the students enjoying the new space and using picture symbols to communicate which piece of equipment they would like to use. As you can see, it's a very popular new addition to Karonga School.

Last term we were very lucky to have a visit from Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre in celebration of NAIDOC Week. The students got to explore various artefacts, practice throwing spears, and do an art activity. As you can see from the photos, they all had a gret time.

We are ready to start Term 3 and looking forward to seeing all the students this morning!

Last week, three of our classes combined to enjoy an excursion to Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre in celebration of upcoming NAIDOC week (5th-12th July). We began our day with an exciting story that featured character puppets and audience participation. Then we went on a bushwalk where students learned about native animals and plants, as well as being given colour swatches to be on the lookout for. A couple of the students managed to find perfect matches! We reached a very interesting rock carving where Aboriginal people used to sharpen their hunting tools and other weapons. We continued our walk down through the bush until we reached a stream where we raced leaves, followed water patterns, and explored the fresh water. On our way back to the starting point the students were given large magnifying glasses to get a closer look at the different textures of trees and they had a blast getting a good look at nature. We had a great day and learnt a lot about the land, nature, and Aboriginal cultures!

Karonga School got into the World Cup spirit on Friday by wearing green and gold to cheer on the Socceroos. Some classes watched the match whille doing soccer-based maths and craft activities. During half time, Room 1 practiced their soccer skills with an indoor game. Even Frankie got in on the action!

We would like to introduce you all to our newest staff member. Meet Frankie! Frankie is a qualified guide dog and has come to Karonga to be our school therapy dog. Today is his first day and he seems very happy to be here! We will share more photos over the coming weeks, but in the meantime, when you come into school, make sure you come and say hello.

To share in the excitement of Australia's final group match in the soccer World Cup, we would like our staff and students to come to school wearing green and gold tomorrow. Support the Socceroos and cheer them on to a win!

As part of the Independence and Pathways (ETIP) program, Rooms 3, 4 and 6 (plus a couple of Room 12 volunteer helpers!) enjoyed an incursion last Friday with EnviroMentors by Keep Australia Beautiful - learning all about recycling and what goes in each of the different bins. The students enjoyed practising sorting rubbish into different bins, something all Karonga students are learning and practising in their classrooms with our new recycling and composting programs this year!
