And thus, gentle reader, ends my first term as a bonafide teacher. I’m very proud of my efforts, deeply grateful to the faculty, staff and students for their welcome and support, and utterly in need of sleep. I’ll see you in two weeks.
Apologies for the radio silence, friends. The huge news, of course, is that I have been appointed as a permanent member of faculty at a maths department of a large Sydney public high school. I’m beyond thrilled. I’m also exhausted! It’s only week four but I already understand why the most important thing to beginning teachers after good Internet connectivity is an afternoon nap. I will endeavour to update you more fulsomely sometime soon. Stay well!

A huge milestone. After completing the penultimate year of my teaching degree I have started work in the NSW public education system. I have been extraordinarily privileged to land a casual teaching gig working alongside the inimitable Eddie Woo (better known as Mr Wootube). Along with his headteachers and a staffroom of legends, Eddie is the backbone of the mathematics faculty at Cherrybrook Technology High School in Sydney. I’m learning lots.

Big win today. New student struggling with adding, dividing and simplifying surds. After just 90 minutes they were genuinely thrilled at how much more they understood. That's what it's all about.

Q: What did you study at school?
A: Back in the day I pushed out 14 units for the HSC. Physics, chemistry, 3 unit maths, 3 unit engineering science, geography, English.

Q: What uni are you studying at?
A: Southern Cross University. I’m in my penultimate year of a BA/BEd program. On graduation I will be eligible to teach both Primary and Secondary.

Q: Wait. Primary AND Secondary?
A: Yes. My degree covers both. I have a major sequence in applied mathematics (that’s the secondary component) and a full sequence of primary curriculum subjects. There’s also a swag of content on child psychology.

Q: What were you before you started retraining?
A: Graphic designer, copywriter and creative strategist. I have experience in the construction, telecommunications and pastoral care sectors. Before that I briefly studied engineering. I hold a Masters in Design Futures from RMIT.
