🏔️ In Loving Memory of Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja MBE (1983 – 2026) 🕯️
The mountaineering world has lost a giant, but the legacy he left behind will inspire generations to come. Following the heartbreaking news from Broad Peak, we say goodbye to Nimsdai, a man who didn’t just climb mountains, but completely rewrote what humanity believed was possible.
Beyond his historic records, Nims’ true greatness lay in his mission to make the world's highest peaks inclusive and culturally diverse. He fiercely advocated for local Nepali guides and proved that the rooftops of the world belong to everyone, regardless of background.
We are incredibly proud to remember Nims as a vital partner for Project Himalayan Walkabout. In this initiative we teamed up with Nims’ company, EliteExped, to bring the largest-ever contingent of Indigenous Australian teenagers to Everest Base Camp.
Nims was a key pillar in this vision, helping lay the groundwork to foster leadership and cultural pride. His championing of the project was a crucial stepping stone aimed at supporting the first-ever ascent of Mount Everest by an Indigenous Australian. He believed ultimate human endeavour belongs to all cultures, and supported by Elite Exped to open doors for Indigenous Australian youth to see themselves on top of the world.
Nims taught us that "nothing is impossible." His physical journey was cut short in the Karakoram range, but his impact on multicultural representation in the outdoors will never fade.
Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with his wife Suchi, his family, the EliteExped team, and the families of all ten climbers who tragically lost their lives.
Rest in peace, Nims. 💔✨
